Desde que cheguei em Taiwan, há um mês, tenho observado tudo com a intenção de contar como funciona um lugar que não é bem um país. Quanto mais vejo, vivencio e leio a respeito, mais difícil fica explicar.

Do ponto de vista humano, Taipé, a capital, é como um formigueiro: muita gente, sempre trabalhando ou fazendo alguma coisa. Todos respeitam os sinaleiros e as faixas de pedestres. No metrô, há filas para tudo, inclusive na frente de cada porta de vagão e nas escadas rolantes. Nos restaurantes, é sempre um atendente que te leva à mesa, serve água e mostra o QR code para fazer o pedido nos mínimos detalhes, inclusive se você quer que cortem a sobremesa em duas partes, caso vá dividir com alguém. Só vi educação civil assim no Japão.

Na história recente, essa ilha foi colônia japonesa por 50 anos. Depois da derrota do Japão na Segunda Guerra Mundial, os nacionalistas chineses vieram para cá quando os comunistas tomaram o poder na China. O plano nacionalista era se fortalecer e retomar o governo de Pequim, algo que nunca aconteceu. Foram 40 anos de ditadura militar, período chamado de Terror Branco. Não se sabe se era pior viver com as loucuras de Mao Tsé-tung na China ou com a paranoia de Chiang Kai-shek em Taiwan. A pujante democracia taiwanesa só começou a se estabelecer em 1986!

Diria que Taiwan é um caldeirão cultural. Povos aborígenes, que povoaram várias ilhas do Pacífico, traçam sua origem aqui. Antes de os chineses chegarem a essas paragens, já havia fortes holandeses e espanhóis gerenciando o comércio local com Batávia (Jacarta, colônia holandesa, hoje Indonésia) e Manila, colônia espanhola (hoje Filipinas). Por ser um local perto da costa chinesa e longe das decisões de Pequim, virou um lugar perfeito de refúgio. Há muito da cultura de Fujian, a província chinesa mais próxima. Os japoneses colonizaram e trouxeram ferrovias, fábricas, escolas e hospitais. Cerca de 300 mil foram expulsos quando os nacionalistas chegaram, trazendo, no lugar, gente anticomunista de várias províncias do interior da China.

No Museu do Palácio Nacional, em Taipé, estão expostos artigos trazidos em 40 mil caixotes da Cidade Proibida, em Pequim, para cá. Foram itens preciosos escondidos dos japoneses que invadiram o norte da China e levados às escondidas para Chongqing, onde os nacionalistas lutavam contra a ocupação (junto com os comunistas, diga-se de passagem). Quando viram a situação ficando “vermelha”, os nacionalistas, junto com esse tesouro inestimável, vieram para cá. Alguns dizem que foi uma grande sorte para a cultura chinesa, já que, anos mais tarde, haveria a Revolução Cultural, quando boa parte do patrimônio histórico da China foi destruída.

Entre as aulas de mandarim, que foram ótimas, mas nem perto do suficiente, a rotina de lição de casa, academia e tarefas domésticas, conheci muito bem Taipé. Tive a impressão de que Taiwan é um país de uma enorme classe média. Meu apartamento fica em Datong, um bairro antigo, densamente povoado, que parece cenário de filme de Wong Kar-wai. Acordo diariamente com a senhora que vende café da manhã na frente da casa dela a partir das cinco da manhã. Às seis, tem a coleta do lixo, e às sete a pracinha está cheia de senhoras fazendo exercícios ou em suas cadeiras de roda, empurradas por cuidadoras filipinas ou vietnamitas. No dia em que cheguei, achei que fosse ser assaltado por alguma gangue nos muitos becos e vielas. Claro que não aconteceu nada. É um dos lugares mais seguros em que já vivi.

O que achei estranho é tudo ter um ar de anos 1980: dos edifícios às roupas das pessoas. Taiwan é tropical, um paraíso para comprar frutas no mercado (tem até jaboticabas), só que o calor e a umidade deixam tudo meio mofado, com manchas marrons. Há também terremotos frequentes. Acordei duas vezes com um chacoalhão na cama. Tive que ver na internet se era mesmo um terremoto ou se estava louco, já que a vida seguia normalmente.

O mandarim de Taiwan é muito parecido com o da China. O que torna tudo complexo é que usam os caracteres tradicionais, enquanto a China usa os simplificados. Nos anos 1950, para facilitar a alfabetização das centenas de milhões de chineses, os 500 caracteres mais utilizados perderam muitos traços. Alguns anos depois, foram mais de mil, junto com os radicais (sim, existem radicais de caracteres chineses). Isso fez com que a escrita em Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau e comunidades chinesas mundo afora, sem contato com os comunistas, mantivesse a forma tradicional. Eu, que sabia ler cerca de 200 caracteres simplificados, quando abri o livro de gramática, voltei a ser analfabeto.

Mas voltando a falar de um lugar que não é bem um país (e que meus conhecidos daqui jamais leiam isto que escrevo): Taiwan não está nas Nações Unidas. Também não tem embaixadas ou consulados estrangeiros formais aqui. Apenas 12 países reconhecem a soberania de Taiwan, como Paraguai, Belize e Guatemala. Isso não impede que os 24 milhões de taiwaneses tenham passaportes e possam viajar sem visto para mais de 140 países. Também tomam suco de pêssego paraguaio. Nem isso os impede de ter sua própria moeda, bolsa de valores, domínio de internet (.tw) e eleições. Os dois principais partidos políticos se alternam: um é contra qualquer integração com a China; o outro é mais favorável a uma aproximação gradual.

O papel de Taiwan é essencial na economia mundial. Todos os celulares do planeta têm chips feitos aqui. Computadores também. Máquinas, robôs, servidores, navios, aviões e satélites também. A ilha conseguiu dominar a tecnologia de chips e semicondutores a ponto de fabricar 90% dos sistemas mais avançados e cerca de 70% dos comuns. Sem Taiwan, a gente volta para a Idade Média. Somando a isso todas as questões históricas — de quando e como a China teve soberania por aqui, de como foi o “divórcio”, se é que houve um, e de como apaziguar taiwaneses e chineses —, acho que nem os chips ultra-avançados da TSMC, com DeepSeek e ChatGPT juntos, conseguem resolver.

Demorei um mês para chegar à conclusão de que, quando o assunto é Taiwan, quanto mais sei, mais sei que nada sei. O que, sim, sei é que vou me concentrar em aprender apenas o mandarim da China comunista, que de comunista tem muito pouco. E é para lá que eu vou antes de voltar para o Brasil. Vou tomar banho de loja “comunista”, comer em restaurantes “comunistas” estrelados, admirar a arquitetura “comunista” de vanguarda em carros elétricos “comunistas” de última geração. Minha tia bolsonarista jamais acreditaria em quão bom pode ser o “comunismo” chinês.

🇬🇧 Since arriving in Taiwan a month ago, I’ve been observing everything with the intention of explaining how a place that isn’t quite a country actually works. The more I see, experience, and read about it, the harder it becomes to explain.

From a human perspective, Taipei, the capital, is like an anthill: lots of people, always working or doing something. Everyone respects traffic lights and crosswalks. In the subway, there are lines for everything, including in front of each train door and on escalators. In restaurants, there is always an attendant who takes you to your table, serves water, and shows you the QR code to place your order down to the smallest detail—even whether you want your dessert cut into two pieces if you’re sharing it with someone. I’ve only seen this level of civic behavior in Japan.

In recent history, this island was a Japanese colony for 50 years. After Japan’s defeat in World War II, Chinese nationalists came here when the communists took power in China. The nationalist plan was to strengthen themselves and retake the government in Beijing—something that never happened. There were 40 years of military dictatorship, a period known as White Terror. It’s hard to say whether it was worse to live with the madness of Mao Zedong in China or under the paranoia of Chiang Kai-shek in Taiwan. Taiwan’s vibrant democracy only began to take shape in 1986!

I would say Taiwan is a cultural melting pot. Indigenous peoples, who went on to populate many Pacific islands, trace their origins here. Before the Chinese arrived in these lands, there were already Dutch and Spanish forts managing local trade with Batavia (Jakarta, a Dutch colony at the time, now Indonesia) and Manila, a Spanish colony (now the Philippines). Being close to the Chinese coast yet far from Beijing’s decisions made it a perfect refuge. There is a strong cultural influence from Fujian, the nearest Chinese province. The Japanese brought railways, factories, schools, and hospitals. Around 300,000 Japanese were expelled when the nationalists arrived, bringing in their place anti-communist people from various inland provinces of China.

At the National Palace Museum in Taipei, artifacts brought in 40,000 crates from the Forbidden City in Beijing are on display. These were precious items hidden from the Japanese who invaded northern China and secretly transported to Chongqing, where the nationalists fought the occupation (alongside the communists, it’s worth noting). When they saw things turning “red,” the nationalists, along with this invaluable treasure, moved here. Some say this was a stroke of luck for Chinese culture, since years later the Cultural Revolution would destroy much of China’s historical heritage.

Between Mandarin classes—which were great but nowhere near enough—homework, gym routines, and daily chores, I got to know Taipei very well. I had the impression that Taiwan is a country with a massive middle class. My apartment is in Datong, an old, densely populated neighborhood that looks like a set from a film by Wong Kar-wai. I wake up every day to a woman selling breakfast in front of her house starting at 5 a.m. At six, the garbage collection comes by, and by seven the small square is full of elderly women exercising or sitting in wheelchairs pushed by Filipino or Vietnamese caregivers. On the day I arrived, I thought I might get mugged by some gang in the many alleys and backstreets. Of course, nothing happened. It’s one of the safest places I’ve ever lived.

What I found strange is that everything feels like the 1980s—from the buildings to the way people dress. Taiwan is tropical, a paradise for buying fruit at the market (they even have jabuticaba), but the heat and humidity make everything feel a bit moldy, with brown stains. There are also frequent earthquakes. I woke up twice to the bed shaking. I had to check online to confirm whether it was really an earthquake or if I was losing my mind, since life goes on as normal.

Taiwanese Mandarin is very similar to that of China. What makes things complicated is that they use traditional characters, while China uses simplified ones. In the 1950s, to improve literacy among hundreds of millions of people, the 500 most commonly used characters lost many of their strokes. A few years later, more than a thousand were simplified, along with their components (yes, Chinese characters have components). This meant that writing in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Chinese communities abroad—without contact with the communists—retained the traditional form. I, who could read about 200 simplified characters, became illiterate again the moment I opened a grammar book.

But back to talking about a place that isn’t quite a country (and one I hope my local friends never read this about): Taiwan is not part of the United Nations. It also doesn’t have formal foreign embassies or consulates. Only 12 countries recognize Taiwan’s sovereignty, such as Paraguay, Belize, and Guatemala. That doesn’t stop its 24 million people from holding passports and traveling visa-free to more than 140 countries. They also drink Paraguayan peach juice. Nor does it stop Taiwan from having its own currency, stock exchange, internet domain (.tw), and elections. The two main political parties alternate in power: one opposes any integration with China, while the other favors a gradual rapprochement.

Taiwan plays an essential role in the global economy. Every mobile phone on the planet contains chips made here. Computers too. Machines, robots, servers, ships, airplanes, and satellites as well. The island has mastered chip and semiconductor technology to the point of producing 90% of the most advanced systems and around 70% of the more common ones. Without Taiwan, we’d be back in the Middle Ages. Add to that all the historical questions—when and how China held sovereignty here, how the “divorce” happened (if it even did), and how to reconcile Taiwanese and Chinese people—and I doubt even the ultra-advanced chips from TSMC, combined with DeepSeek and ChatGPT, could solve it.

It took me a month to conclude that, when it comes to Taiwan, the more I learn, the more I realize I know nothing. What I do know is that I’ll focus on learning mainland Chinese Mandarin—which is not very “communist” at all. That’s where I’m heading next before returning to Brazil. I’ll go on a “communist” shopping spree, eat at “communist” Michelin-starred restaurants, admire cutting-edge “communist” architecture in next-generation “communist” electric cars. My Bolsonaro-supporting aunt would never believe how good Chinese “communism” can be.

Fiquei tanto tempo sem escrever que me sinto como uma represa. É tanta coisa para contar que a barreira pode ceder e as novidades saírem em enxurrada, sem pé nem cabeça. Na verdade, fevereiro estava meio lamaçal. Passei em modo curitibano, dedicando energia a outros assuntos que já contei aqui, mas que não têm mais me motivado a escrever de forma criativa e divertida. Até mesmo o mandarim estava me sugando, como no dia da marmota, em que se começa do zero cada vez que acordo e abro o livro.

Nada melhor do que aviões, aeroportos e novos horizontes para fazer o desejo de contar histórias transbordar. Sabia que, assim que entrasse na China, o bichinho narrador que mora na minha cabeça voltaria a sussurrar. Hoje já se passaram 20 dias de China. O mandarim continua abaixo de zero, mas, pela primeira vez, entrei em um café e pedi um cappuccino usando todo o meu vocabulário e cara de pau. Saiu um café delicioso e um elogio da barista — que, claro, não entendi.

Ah, a China!

Voei de Bangkok para Guangzhou (Cantão) e, ao contrário de ser um voo em que eu era o único ocidental em meio a um mar de chineses, um conjunto cosmopolita de passageiros me fez companhia: árabes, africanos, europeus, indianos, asiáticos de vários países. Todos em busca do novo, do high-tech, da energia que move o planeta. Basta sair do avião para entrar em outra dimensão. Os aplicativos, o uso da tecnologia e da inteligência artificial, a organização e o tamanho dos terminais, estacionamentos, estações de trem… é tudo gigante! E tudo é feito a partir do celular, que funciona de forma diferente de como estamos acostumados. Três aplicativos dão conta de tudo: Amap no lugar do Google Maps, Trip.com para reservar tudo e Alipay para respirar, pagar, traduzir, chamar táxi, converter, pedir socorro. Só que, claro, a interface é chinesa, cheia de informações diminutas, coloridas, que mudam, pulam, brilham. Algumas se traduzem automaticamente, mas de forma estranhas, literais demais. Na maioria das vezes, é fechar os olhos e seguir em frente, torcendo para dar certo.

A China sofreu uma sublimação. Não foi de sólido para líquido, de líquido para gasoso. Deu um salto triplo, um bundalelê no Ocidente. Em 20 minutos após o avião pousar, eu já estava em um táxi trocando a passagem do trem-bala para uma estação mais próxima, em um trem mais conveniente para Guilin. Pense: em 20 minutos eu saí do avião, cadastrei minhas digitais e foto no Grande Sistema Chinês, passei pela imigração, coletei a mala, atravessei a alfândega e desci três lances de escadas rolantes até um lugar exclusivo para carros de aplicativo, que chegam exatamente na zona numerada onde a gente espera. Para trocar de trem, bastaram alguns toques. Eu quase não cabia em mim de tanta emoção e excitação.

Cheguei a Guilin meio atordoado com tudo, inclusive com a velocidade do trem, o conforto do assento (isso sem viajar na classe business, com assentos que reclinam e viram cama) e a paisagem. Me belisque: estou vendo mesmo a China ali fora? As montanhas que aparecem em murais, pinturas e iconografia chinesas são uma das grandes atrações turísticas do país. De Guilin segui para Yangshuo, que é o centro nevrálgico do turismo local — o castelo da Cinderela da Disney dessa região.

Bem, o hiperturismo não é coisa só de Barcelona ou Mykonos. Na China, qualquer ponto de interesse se transforma numa muvuca. O que se esperar de um país de bilhões? Ainda bem que a infraestrutura acompanha: há aeroporto, trem, viaduto, hotel e restaurante para todos. Só que é um emaranhado de lojinhas de tranqueiras, redes de chás multicoloridos, estúdios de roupas típicas para sessões de fotos, McDonald’s, Starbucks, KFC no meio. É preciso filtrar a bagunça para apreciar a beleza.

A próxima parada foi Chengdu, no meio da China. Terra de comida picante e ursos panda. Em menos de cinco horas, cruzei 1.500 quilômetros de plantações, painéis solares e cidades desconhecidas de dois a três milhões de habitantes. Não vi pandas, mas Chengdu me atraiu por ser a cidade dos inconformados chineses. Uma cidade grande, longe dos controles e censuras de Pequim e da busca desenfreada por sucesso e dinheiro de Xangai. Na verdade, a região de Sichuan incomoda o governo central por ser rica, pujante, cheia de gente inteligente. Tanto que separaram Chengdu (com 20 milhões de habitantes) de Chongqing (com 32) para ficar mais fácil de manejá-las. Juntas, eram capazes de tomar conta do resto do país. Quem nunca ouviu falar de Bo Xilai, concorrente de Xi Jinping, saiba que, por um triz, a China não teve um sichuanês no comando. Chengdu tem rap, literatura, poesia e teatro experimental. Bem, tinha — até o Big Brother apertar um pouco mais os parafusos da censura. Mesmo assim, é um lugar de gente legal. Dizem que o sotaque da cidade é inconfundível. Eu, claro, não notei.

A apoteose da viagem foi a província de Yunnan, com mais uma jornada de trem-bala em direção ao sul, às fronteiras da China com o Sudeste Asiático e o Tibete. Yunnan é a Bahia da China, a província para onde todos sonham em viajar e relaxar. Kunming, a capital, que imaginei ser um lugar provinciano, é uma metrópole de 9 milhões. O que faz a diferença é a composição da população local. Cerca de 35% dos 50 milhões de yunanenses faz parte de uma das 25 minorias étnicas (a China toda tem 56 minorias). Os Yi, Bai, Hani, Dai, Miao, Naxi… gente que vive por ali há milênios. Poderíamos dizer que são os indígenas da China. É uma profusão de cores, comidas, estilos arquitetônicos, religiões e línguas que dá nó na cabeça. Cada um com sua loja de bubble tea.

São três os destinos principais em Yunnan: Dali, Lijiang e Shangri-La. Dali fica à beira de um lago enorme e tem um clima relax. Jovens com violão e cabeleiras, cafés independentes. A cidade murada é bastante antiga e foi a capital de um reino que dominava o comércio da Rota da Seda do Sul, que entrava na China pela Birmânia, Laos e Tailândia. Um dos chás mais apreciados do mundo é cultivado ali, o Pu’er. Lijiang fica na porta de entrada do Tibete. É mais fotogênica, com uma enorme montanha de cinco mil metros de altitude, riachos e pontes de pedra. Tem hotéis melhores e mais atrações. Quase todo mundo no meu hotel estava ali para fazer hiking nas trilhas nevadas. Todos equipados com roupas e botas especiais, câmeras e drones. Nisso, os chineses se equiparam aos japoneses: adoram gadgets e se montam com afinco para curtir seus hobbies.

De Lijiang fui para Shangri-La, já no altiplano tibetano. Fiz de tudo para pegar um assento com janela no trem-bala, para poder apreciar as ravinas, picos nevados e vales com iaques. Mas o trem entrou em um túnel a dois minutos da partida e, quando saímos, uma hora depois, já estávamos chegando. A China é assim: túneis e pontes para encontrar o caminho mais rápido e eficiente. O que também me esperava do lado de lá do túnel era uma friaca braba, bem tibetana. Quase caiu minha orelha. O hotel também foi engraçado, pois tinha certeza de que ficaria em um estabelecimento da rede de luxo Shangri-La. Imaginava a sauna, a piscina, o spa. Só que todos os hotéis da cidade têm Shangri-La no nome. O meu era um lugar fofinho, limpinho, mas sem piscina, sauna, spa ou bufê de café da manhã e cardápio de travesseiros.

Shangri-La é sinônimo de paraíso, onde o homem e a natureza vivem em harmonia. Foi um antropólogo estrangeiro que sugeriu ali ser tal lugar, mítico e a ideia pegou. A China logo aproveitou o nome e registrou o lugar no mapa. Há um monastério lamaísta que é semelhante ao Potala de Lhasa, a capital do Tibete, e faz o tempo correr para trás cada vez que se cruzam as cortinas da fachada para penetrar no hall com incensários, flâmulas, mil estátuas douradas e monges recitando em transe. Até o sol apareceu nesse dia e transformou a paisagem num caleidoscópio multicolorido, contrastando o azul celeste com o amarelo dos templos. Foi de tirar o fôlego — até porque eu estava a quase 3.500 metros de altitude. Vários turistas carregavam garrafas de oxigênio compradas em lojas de conveniência.

Da chegada ao aeroporto de Guangzhou, passando por Guilin, Yangshuo, Chengdu, Kunming e as cidades históricas de Yunnan, eu pensava: se isto é o comunismo, eu quero para mim. A China é mais dinâmica, limpa, segura, barata e aberta do que lugares que se consideram o ápice da democracia e das liberdades individuais. A busca pelo bem-estar coletivo — com o plantio de árvores para diminuir a poluição, a eletrificação dos transportes, praças, escolas, transporte público hipercapilarizado, túneis, pontes, trens, comida (nunca vi tanta fruta e comida de rua na vida) — é de dar inveja.

O papel cada vez mais central da China no mundo não é nada acidental. Não quero também passar pano para as centenas de coisas ruins que existem na China e para o que o país faz com certos outros. Mas vejo um modelo muito mais centrado e equilibrado para liderar o discurso global. Fora que 25% do mundo é chinês — ou seja, eles têm volume suficiente para elaborar as regras do presente.

Gostaria de seguir contando sobre impressões, anedotas e experiências. Foram 20 dias intensos de aprendizado. O mandarim segue básico. Tento ao menos ser simpático, repetindo xie xie (obrigado), ni hao (olá) e hen hao (muito bom) o tempo todo, usando indiscriminadamente um ou outro. Ah, se achava que as pessoas ficavam muito coladas no celular no Brasil, agora que vi como é na China, acho os brasileiros até comedidos. Se bem que o respeito ao espaço público é muito maior na China. Ninguém fica vendo redes sociais em alto volume, nem escutando mensagens pessoais de voz no WhatsApp junto com todo mundo ao redor. Sim, tem a tia que fala gritando com alguém, as pessoas que dirigem motinhos elétricas silenciosas pelas calçadas e quase passam por cima dos pedestres. Fazer fila é um conceito bem relativo, bem como o que se serve em um restaurante dito vegetariano. Talvez, na China, as galinhas estejam na categoria legumes, junto com as tartarugas.

Vou parar por aqui, pois cheguei a Taiwan, a ilha tão cobiçada pelo governo chinês. Foi como voltar a habitar o mesmo ecossistema ao qual estamos acostumados, com Google, cartões de crédito e mais gente que fala inglês. As aulas de mandarim começam em breve, diariamente, das 9h às 16h. Acho que exagerei na dose, mas te conto em breve — em português ou, quem sabe, já em mandarim.

🇬🇧 I went so long without writing that I feel like a dam. There’s so much to tell that the barrier could give way and everything might come rushing out in a flood, with neither structure nor sense. In truth, February was a bit of a swamp. I stayed in “Curitiba mode,” putting energy into other matters I’ve already mentioned here, but that no longer motivate me to write in a creative and fun way. Even Mandarin was draining me—like in Groundhog Day, where you start from zero every time you wake up and open the book.

Nothing beats planes, airports, and new horizons to make the desire to tell stories overflow. I knew that, as soon as I entered China, the little storyteller living in my head would start whispering again. It’s now been 20 days in China. My Mandarin is still below zero, but for the first time I walked into a café and ordered a cappuccino using my entire vocabulary—and sheer boldness. Out came a delicious coffee and a compliment from the barista—which, of course, I didn’t understand.

Ah, China!

I flew from Bangkok to Guangzhou (Canton), and instead of being the only Westerner in a sea of Chinese passengers, I found myself among a cosmopolitan mix: Arabs, Africans, Europeans, Indians, Asians from various countries. All searching for something new, for high-tech, for the energy that drives the planet. The moment you step off the plane, you enter another dimension. The apps, the use of technology and artificial intelligence, the organization and sheer scale of terminals, parking lots, train stations… everything is gigantic! And everything runs through your phone, but in a way completely different from what we’re used to. Three apps handle it all: Amap instead of Google Maps, Trip.com to book everything, and Alipay for breathing—paying, translating, calling a taxi, converting currencies, asking for help. But of course, the interface is in Chinese, full of tiny, colorful bits of information that move, jump, and flash. Some things translate automatically, but in strange, overly literal ways. Most of the time, it’s about closing your eyes and moving forward, hoping it works.

China has undergone a kind of sublimation. Not from solid to liquid or liquid to gas—it made a triple leap, a full-on flip over the West. Within 20 minutes of landing, I was already in a taxi, changing my high-speed train ticket to a closer station, onto a more convenient train to Guilin. Think about it: in 20 minutes I got off the plane, registered my fingerprints and photo in the Great Chinese System, went through immigration, picked up my luggage, crossed customs, and went down three escalators to a designated ride-hailing area, where cars arrive exactly at the numbered zone where you’re waiting. Changing trains took just a few taps. I could barely contain myself with excitement.

I arrived in Guilin a bit dazed by everything—the speed of the train, the comfort of the seat (even without traveling business class, where seats recline into beds), and the scenery. Pinch me: am I really seeing China out there? The mountains that appear in murals, paintings, and Chinese iconography are one of the country’s great tourist attractions. From Guilin I went to Yangshuo, the nerve center of local tourism— Disney’s Cinderella castle of the region.

Well, overtourism isn’t just a thing in Barcelona or Mykonos. In China, any point of interest turns into an invading mob. What else would you expect from a country of billions? Luckily, the infrastructure keeps up: there are airports, trains, overpasses, hotels, and restaurants for everyone. But it also comes with a tangle of trinket shops, colorful bubble tea chains, costume studios for photoshoots, McDonald’s, Starbucks, KFC right in the middle. You have to filter out the chaos to appreciate the beauty.

Next stop: Chengdu, in central China. Land of spicy food and pandas. In less than five hours, I crossed 1,500 kilometers of farmland, solar panels, and unknown cities of two to three million inhabitants. I didn’t see pandas, but Chengdu drew me in as the city of China’s nonconformists. A large city, far from the controls and censorship of Beijing and from Shanghai’s relentless pursuit of success and money. In fact, the Sichuan region bothers the central government for being wealthy, vibrant, and full of intelligent people. So much so that Chengdu (20 million inhabitants) was separated from Chongqing (32 million) to make them easier to manage. Together, they could have dominated the rest of the country. If you’ve never heard of Bo Xilai, a rival of Xi Jinping, know that China almost had a Sichuanese leader. Chengdu has rap, literature, poetry, and experimental theater—or at least it did, until Big Brother tightened the screws of censorship. Still, it’s a place full of cool people. They say the local accent is unmistakable. I, of course, couldn’t tell.

The apotheosis of the trip was Yunnan province, with yet another high-speed train journey south, toward China’s borders with Southeast Asia and Tibet. Kunming, the capital, which I imagined as provincial, is actually a metropolis of 9 million. What makes it different is the makeup of its population. About 35% of Yunnan’s 50 million inhabitants belong to one of 25 ethnic minorities (China as a whole has 56). The Yi, Bai, Hani, Dai, Miao, Naxi… people who have lived there for millennia. You could say they are China’s indigenous peoples. It’s a profusion of colors, foods, architectural styles, religions, and languages that makes your head spin. Each with their own bubble tea shop.

There are three main destinations in Yunnan: Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La. Dali sits by a huge lake and has a relaxed vibe—young people with guitars and long hair, independent cafés. The walled city is quite old and was once the capital of a kingdom that dominated trade along the Southern Silk Road, which entered China through Burma, Laos, and Thailand. One of the world’s most prized teas is grown there: Pu’er. Lijiang is at the gateway to Tibet. It’s more photogenic, with a massive 5,000-meter mountain, streams, and stone bridges. It has better hotels and more attractions. Almost everyone at my hotel was there for hiking on snowy trails—fully equipped with special clothing, boots, cameras, and drones. In that sense, the Chinese are like the Japanese: they love gadgets and fully gear up to enjoy their hobbies.

From Lijiang I went to Shangri-La, already on the Tibetan plateau. I did everything I could to get a window seat on the high-speed train to admire ravines, snow-capped peaks, and valleys with yaks. But the train entered a tunnel two minutes after departure, and when we came out of it an hour later, we were already arriving. China is like that: tunnels and bridges to find the fastest, most efficient route. Waiting for me on the other side was intense cold—very Tibetan. My ears almost froze off. The hotel was also funny, because I was sure I had booked a luxury Shangri-La hotel, imagining a sauna, a pool, a spa. But every hotel in the city has “Shangri-La” in its name. Mine was cute and clean—but no pool, sauna, spa, breakfast buffet, or pillow menu.

Shangri-La is synonymous with paradise, where humans and nature live in harmony. It was a foreign anthropologist who suggested that this mythical place was there—and the idea caught on. China quickly adopted the name and put it on the map. There’s a lamaist monastery resembling the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet’s capital, where time seems to run backward as you cross the curtains and enter halls filled with incense burners, banners, a thousand golden statues, and monks chanting in a trance. Even the sun came out that day, turning the landscape into a multicolored kaleidoscope, contrasting the sky-blue with the yellow of the temples. It was breathtaking—also because I was at nearly 3,500 meters altitude. Many tourists carried oxygen canisters bought at convenience stores.

From arriving at Guangzhou airport, passing through Guilin, Yangshuo, Chengdu, Kunming, and the historic towns of Yunnan, I kept thinking: if this is communism, I want it for myself. China is more dynamic, cleaner, safer, cheaper, and more open than places that consider themselves the pinnacle of democracy and individual freedoms. The pursuit of collective well-being—with tree planting to reduce pollution, electrified transport, public squares, schools, highly connected public transit, tunnels, bridges, trains, food (I’ve never seen so much fruit and street food in my life)—is enviable.

China’s increasingly central role in the world is no accident. I don’t want to gloss over the many negative aspects of the country or what it does to others. But I do see a more centered and balanced model for leading the global discourse. And after all, 25% of the world is Chinese— they have enough scale to shape the rules of the present.

I’d like to keep sharing impressions, anecdotes, and experiences. These have been 20 intense days of learning. My Mandarin is still basic. I try at least to be friendly, repeating xie xie (thank you), ni hao (hello), and hen hao (very good) all the time, using them interchangeably. And if I thought people in Brazil were glued to their phones, now that I’ve seen China, Brazilians seem restrained. That said, respect for public space is much greater in China. No one blasts social media videos or listens to voice messages out loud on WhatsApp around others. Sure, there’s the aunt shouting on the phone, people riding silent electric scooters on sidewalks and nearly running over pedestrians. Queuing is a somewhat flexible concept, as is what’s served in a “vegetarian” restaurant. Maybe in China, chickens are classified as vegetables—along with turtles.

I’ll stop here, as I’ve arrived in Taiwan, the island so coveted by the Chinese government. It felt like returning to a familiar ecosystem, with Google, credit cards, and more people who speak English. Mandarin classes start soon, daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. I may have overdone it—but I’ll tell you soon, in English or, who knows, maybe already in Mandarin.

Elaborei um plano para o futuro. Para tentar não perder a agilidade mental, em vez de resolver palavras-cruzadas e sudoku, me joguei no mandarim. Pode ser que jamais consiga fluência para ver um filme ou mesmo ler uma revista chinesa. O que importa é a jornada. Se ela servir para ocupar meus neurônios com caracteres, tons e todo o mistério deste idioma milenar, já terá valido a pena.

Falar mandarim não é um plano novo. Há seis anos, estava neste mesmo lugar. Tinha até mesmo uma matrícula para cursar dois meses em uma escola de idiomas em Pequim. Queria ficar semi-fluente para depois ser guia de turistas chineses em Paris. Fui para São Paulo solicitar o visto no Consulado da China, no fim de março de 2020. Éramos poucos. Os chineses que legalizavam documentos para não terem que voltar para a China me olhavam com curiosidade. Wuhan já estava bloqueada.

Só desisti quando a passagem aérea foi cancelada. A única opção seria comprar outra via Etiópia e ter que ficar 14 dias de quarentena num bunker do aeroporto de Pequim antes de poder circular pela cidade com códigos QR, máscaras, cotonetes no nariz (e até no fiofó) e medo. Mal sabia eu, naquele março de 2020, que em breve estaríamos todos vivendo algo parecido, lavando as mãos a cada hora e paranoicos com tudo.

A pandemia passou. Vieram novos problemas, que já entraram na rotina. O mundo ficou de cabeça para baixo, e a vontade de aprender mandarim continua bem acesa. Por ser tão difícil, quase impossível, me atiça ainda mais, é claro. Resolvi encarar como remédio antidemência para não perder a motivação. Prometi a mim mesmo que, se seguir as aulas online à risca e passar no primeiro teste oficial depois do Carnaval (estilo the book is on the table) compro uma passagem e me mando para a China. Poderia incorporar a artista-performer Marina Abramovic e caminhar ao logo da Grande Muralha. Ou ser um Marco Polo do século XXI.

Aprender uma língua diferente depois dos 50 é muito difícil. Mas ensina humildade, paciência e resiliência; mais úteis nessa época da vida do que o próprio idioma. A professora fala e eu não entendo nada. Leio os exercícios do livro e, duas horas depois, já não consigo ler de volta. Não saio da fase book on the table, mas quem sabe daqui a uns dias já consiga articular pen on the sofa. Claro que é frustrante, ainda mais quando comprar 买 e vender 卖 são “mai”, só que com tons diferentes na hora de falar e um chapeuzinho a mais na hora de escrever.

Isso para não falar do caderno de caligrafia, que, quando vejo o resultado de repetidas tentativas escrevendo wo 我 (eu), parece a lição de casa de uma criança de três anos sendo alfabetizada no Tibete. Me pergunto como seria “alfabetizar” em mandarim se não usam o alfabeto. No lugar, eles têm algo que soa como “pobomofo”.

Vamos ver onde tudo isso vai dar. Acredito ser um bom plano para o futuro. Se um dia começar a esquecer o nome das pessoas e das coisas, quem sabe me lembre da frase duibuqi 对不起, “me desculpe”. Também vou torcer para que a próxima newsletter já saia de algum lugar do Oriente. O plano está montado, só falta passar na tal prova.

🇬🇧 I’ve devised a plan for the future. To try not to lose my mental agility, instead of doing crossword puzzles or Sudoku, I threw myself into Mandarin. I may never achieve enough fluency to watch a movie or even read a Chinese magazine. What matters is the journey. If it serves to occupy my neurons with characters, tones, and all the mystery of this ancient language, it will have been worth it.

• 🤷🏻‍♂️ paranoia #1 I read in a medical magazine that working at night or on alternating shifts increases the risk of dementia. I thought about the two years I spent as a Night Manager in London and the three years as an Emirates flight attendant in Dubai — and there’s no blueberry with creatine that can fill that hole. Mandarin now!

Speaking Mandarin is not a new plan. Six years ago, I was in this very same place. I even had an enrollment to study for two months at a language school in Beijing. I wanted to become semi-fluent so that later I could guide Chinese tourists in Paris. I went to São Paulo to apply for the visa at the Chinese Consulate at the end of March 2020. There were only a few of us. The Chinese people legalizing documents not to have to return to China looked at me with curiosity. Wuhan was already locked down.

I only gave up when my flight was canceled. The only option would have been to buy another ticket via Ethiopia and spend 14 days in quarantine in a bunker at Beijing airport before being allowed to move around the city with QR codes, masks, swabs up the nose (and even up the arse), and fear. Little did I know, in that March of 2020, that soon we would all be living something similar, washing our hands every hour and paranoid about everything.

The pandemic is gone. New problems came along. Some have already become part of the routine. The world turned upside down, and the desire to learn Mandarin remains very much alive. Because it is so difficult, almost impossible, it excites me even more, of course. I decided to treat it as an anti-dementia remedy so I won’t lose motivation. I promised myself that if I follow the online classes strictly and pass the first official test in February (very basic level), I’ll buy a ticket and head to China. I could copy the performance artist Marina Abramović and walk along the Great Wall. Or be a 21st-century Marco Polo.

• 🤷🏻‍♂️ paranoia #2 I am afraid to remake the 2020 plans now in 2026 and have the whole pandemonium happening again, pandemic and lockdowns comprised. ;-(

Learning a different language after 50 is very hard. But it teaches humility, patience, and resilience, more useful at this stage of life than the language itself. The teacher speaks and I don’t understand a thing. I read the exercises in the book and, two hours later, I can’t read them back. I’m stuck in the book-on-the-table phase, but who knows, maybe in a few days I’ll be able to articulate pen-on-the-sofa. Of course it’s frustrating, especially when buying 买 and selling 卖 are both “mai,” just with different tones when spoken and an extra little hat when written. Not to mention the calligraphy notebook: when I look at the result of my repeated attempts at writing wo 我 (“I”), it looks like the homework of a three-year-old child learning to write in Tibet.

Let’s see where all this leads. I believe it’s a good plan for the future. If one day I start forgetting the names of people and things, maybe I’ll at least remember the phrase duibuqi 对不起, “I’m sorry.” And I’ll also hope that the next newsletter will already come from somewhere in the East. The plan is set. All that’s left is to pass that exam in a few weeks.

Acredito que você esteja tão feliz quanto eu por o Natal ter passado. Esse hiato entre as duas grandes festas de fim de ano é um respiro mais do que necessário. É surreal que o mês mais atribulado do ano seja também o mais curto — afinal, dezembro acaba no dia 23. Uma amiga sugeriu que o Natal fosse como a Bienal. Achei a ideia interessante e sugeri que empacotássemos junto o Réveillon.

Contudo, o que rege a vida é a natureza. O ano é assim pois é o tempo que a Terra leva para dar uma volta em torno do Sol. O Natal, o Ramadã, o Ano Novo Chinês e o Chanucá são regidos mais pela astronomia do que pela religião. Luas, solstícios e equinócios comprovam que, mesmo com toda a tecnologia do mundo para fazer cartões de Natal fofinhos e animar fotos antigas com IA, o básico, o chão firme, a passagem do tempo ainda são determinados por algo muito maior.

Essa conexão com a natureza e seus ciclos é o que tem me motivado a viajar: apreciar o mar, ver o sol nascer, a chuva chegar. Ter essa âncora me ajuda a lembrar, todos os dias, que o tempo está passando, que as coisas estão mudando — mas também que a vida é cíclica, que tudo passa e que o melhor remédio ainda é o bom e velho tempo. Basta ter paciência, pois ele funciona mais devagar do que a homeopatia. Caminhar longas distâncias é um grande exercício de calma. As duas grandes caminhadas que fiz em 2025 são prova disso.

O Ano-Novo está chegando, mas seguimos iguais. Passaremos mais uma vez pelo Carnaval e pela Páscoa. Teremos Copa do Mundo e eleições gerais. Daqui a oito newsletters saberemos se o Brasil foi penta. Daqui a dez, quem será o presidente do Brasil até a Copa do Marrocos, em 2030. No meio do caminho haverá drama e emoção. Viagens, espero. Encontros e desencontros. Chegadas e partidas. Nada que a gente não tenha visto antes — pelo menos quem já viveu mais de 50 largadas da São Silvestre. O futuro já começou. Feliz Ano-Novo!

🇬🇧 I believe you’re just as happy as I am that Christmas is over. This gap between the two big year-end celebrations is a more than necessary breather. It’s surreal that the busiest month of the year is also the shortest — after all, December ends on the 23rd. A friend suggested that Christmas should be like a Biennale. I found the idea interesting and suggested we pack New Year’s Eve together with it.

However, what truly governs life is Nature. The year is the way it is because it’s the time Earth takes to orbit the Sun. Christmas, Ramadan, the Chinese New Year, and Hanukkah are guided more by astronomy than by religion. Moons, solstices, and equinoxes prove that, even with all the technology in the world to make cute Christmas cards and animate old photos with AI, the basics — solid ground, the passage of time — are still determined by something much greater.

This connection with Nature and its cycles is what has motivated me to travel: to appreciate the sea, watch the sunrise, and see the rain arrive. Having this anchor helps me remember, every day, that time is passing, that things are changing — but also that life is cyclical, that everything passes, and that the best remedy is still good old time. You just need patience, because it works more slowly than homeopathy. Walking long distances is a great exercise in calm. The two long walks I did in 2025 are proof of that.

The New Year is approaching, but we remain the same. We’ll go through Carnival and Easter once again. We’ll have the World Cup and general elections (in Brazil). Eight newsletters from now, we’ll know whether Brazil became five-time world-champion. Ten from now, we’ll know who will be president of Brazil until the Morocco World Cup in 2030. Along the way there will be drama and excitement. Trips, I hope. Meetings and farewells. Arrivals and departures. Nothing we haven’t seen before — at least for those who have already witnessed more than 50 Springs. The future has already begun. Happy New Year!

Há alguns dias aconteceu algo inusitado. Cheguei na Cidade do Cabo e mandei uma mensagem para um ex-namorado sul-africano da minha época de Dubai. Fazia uns 15 anos que a gente não se via, mas como estava no país dele, achei legal mandar um alô. Ele mora em Dubai e nem é da Cidade do Cabo, mas de Pretória. De todos os modos, queria apenas fazer um aceno amigável.

Em menos de dois minutos ele respondeu dizendo que acabava de desembarcar na África do Sul para visitar a família e que em breve estaria na Cidade do Cabo. Não só isso, em algumas mensagens a mais, nos demos conta de que havíamos reservado apartamentos de Airbnb no mesmo bairro, na mesma rua, no mesmo edifício.

Quando nos vimos, foram 15 anos que desapareceram. Colocamos toda a conversa em dia, mais ele do que eu. Sou ótimo para escutar e mais parcimonioso ao falar. O que me impressionou foram todas as lacunas de memória que tive. Ele lembrava de assuntos, acontecimentos, pessoas e várias outras coisas que simplesmente foram apagadas do meu cérebro. Quando ele insistia dizendo “como é que você não se lembra?” eu fazia aquela cara de bunda, sabe?

Por um lado, já faz mais de 20 anos que vivi em Dubai. Foram tantas vidas desde então que acredito que o cérebro precisou jogar muita coisa no arquivo morto para dar conta de absorver as novas experiências. Claro que me lembrei de boa parte dos assuntos. Outros foram mais uma vaga sensação de familiaridade. Pensei nas outras centenas de coisas de que simplesmente já não vou mais me lembrar. Um hotel legal, um encontro, uma festa, um jantar, uma pessoa. Talvez por isso eu guarde chaves de hotel, entradas de museus, cartões de embarque e outros papeizinhos que vou catando ao longo das viagens. Tenho também uma lista com o nome dos filmes vistos e outras com os livros lidos. Pistas para o futuro.

Uma lembrança inesquecível, como o mesmo ex que encontrei na Cidade do Cabo, foi quando, por outra coincidência, fomos escalados para o mesmo voo de Dubai para Milão. Como era um voo novo com apenas duas frequências semanais, tivemos 5 noites na cidade. Eu tinha passagem para Nápoles, planos de explorar a Costa Amalfitana, tudo escondido da empresa, claro, que nos obrigava a ficar de sobreaviso no hotel todos os dias. Ele resolveu se arriscar e foi junto, apesar de estar namorando com um turco enciumado. As belezas de Amalfi e Positano foram mais fortes do que qualquer fidelidade. Na volta para Dubai eu estava jurado de morte pelo turco, como se a culpa fosse minha e não da Itália (ou do ex). Lembrei que meu medo de virar eunuco é que fez com que a gente ficasse 15 anos sem se falar.

Li em algum lugar que a falta de memória pode ser um certo espelhismo quando temos alguém com Alzheimer na família. Eu, que pego psicologicamente todas as doenças dos meus próximos, acredito que possa ser isso também. Vou me esquecendo junto com a minha mãe. Há quem diga que foi a covid. Ou essa forma louca em que levamos a vida hoje em dia, completamente cheia de interrupções e com vários assuntos em paralelo o tempo todo. Pelo menos não me esqueço de escrever essa carta uma vez por mês.

Quanto à Cidade do Cabo, é um dos lugares mais magníficos do planeta. Bem mais do que a Costa Amalfitana. Só que dessa vez ficamos mesmo no bom papo, eu e o ex. Saímos para jantar com os amigos dele, demos risada, aprendi a gostar de chenin blanc. Bebi uma taça. Duas talvez? Pelo menos até onde me lembro.

🇬🇧 A few days ago, something unusual happened. I arrived in Cape Town and sent a message to a South African ex-boyfriend from my time in Dubai. We hadn’t seen each other in about 15 years, but since I was in his country, I thought it would be nice to say hello. He lives in Dubai and isn’t even from Cape Town, but from Pretoria. Either way, I just wanted to make a friendly gesture.

In less than two minutes, he replied, saying he had just landed in South Africa to visit his family and that he would soon be in Cape Town. Not only that, but in a few more messages, we realized we had booked Airbnb apartments in the same neighborhood, on the same street, in the same building.

When we met, the 15 years vanished. We caught up on everything — more him than me, of course. I’m great at listening and more sparing when it comes to speaking. What impressed me were all the gaps in my memory. He remembered events, people, and countless other things that had simply been erased from my brain. When he insisted, saying, “How do you not remember?” I would make that clueless face, you know?

On one hand, it’s been over 20 years since I lived in Dubai. So many incarnations have passed since then that I believe my brain had to move a lot of things to the “archive” to make room for new experiences. Of course, I remembered most of the topics; others remained only with a vague sense of familiarity. I thought of the hundreds of things I simply will no longer remember: a nice hotel, a meeting, a party, a dinner, a person. Maybe that’s why I keep hotel keys, museum tickets, boarding passes, and other little papers I collect during my travels. I also keep lists of movies I’ve seen and books I’ve read. Creating clues for the future.

An unforgettable memory, like meeting the same ex in Cape Town, was another coincidence: we (the ex and I) were assigned to the same flight from Dubai to Milan. Since it was a new flight with only two weekly departures, we had five nights in the city. I had a ticket to Naples and plans to explore the Amalfi Coast — all hidden away from the company, of course, which required us to be on call at the hotel every day. He decided to take the risk and went along, even though he was dating a jealous Turkish man. The beauty of Amalfi and Positano was stronger than any fidelity. On the way back to Dubai, I was cursed by the Turkish boyfriend, as if it were my fault and not Italy’s (or the ex’s). I remembered that my fear of being castrated is what made us go 15 years without speaking.

I read somewhere that memory loss can be a kind of mirroring when someone in the family has Alzheimer’s. I, who psychologically catch all the illnesses of my loved ones, believe this may be true for me as well. I gradually forget along with my mother. Some say it was covid, or maybe the crazy way we live today — constantly interrupted and juggling multiple things at once. At least I don’t forget to write this letter once a month.

As for Cape Town, it’s one of the most magnificent places on the planet. Far more than the Amalfi Coast. But this time, it was all about good conversation between me and the ex. We went out to dinner with his friends, laughed a lot, and I learned to enjoy Chenin Blanc. I had one glass. Maybe two? At least as far as I can remember.

É preciso muita paciência para visitar a Índia. Paciência e desprendimento. O país-continente poderia ser outro planeta. Tudo é igual, mas diferente, e são essas diferenças que dão curto-circuito na cabeça. Hoje eu adoro. Venho para cá e mergulho nas ruas, na comida, nos templos, nos cheiros, nas feiras e nas massagens ayurvédicas. Mas demorou para a coisa deslanchar.

Na minha primeira visita, no auge do verão de 1997, de mochila e com orçamento de estudante, eu me sentia mais em missão de conhecer o Taj Mahal, Jaipur e a Grande Mesquita de Délhi do que em férias. Saía cedo da espelunca onde me hospedava, negociava com um riquixá que, antes de me levar para onde eu queria, fazia escala em várias lojas de souvenir. Visitava os monumentos, tirava fotos em meio à multidão que parecia querer um pedaço de mim. Voltava para o quarto fedido (eu igualmente fedido), derretido por dentro, para passar o resto do dia em posição fetal, com o ar-condicionado a todo vapor.

Trinta anos depois, muita coisa mudou. Hoje a Índia é uma das maiores economias do mundo. O país se abriu, e a globalização penetrou a fundo — para o bem e para o mal. Mas talvez a maior mudança tenha acontecido comigo. Aprendi a entender o país, a não aplicar os mesmos julgamentos nem esperar o mesmo conforto de Santiago ou Istambul.

Não deixo que meu fascínio por um lugar tão diferente se perca em detalhes práticos como filas intermináveis, um congestionamento absurdo ou a burocracia kafkiana que transforma o simples ato de atravessar um aeroporto indiano em provação. Se continuo vindo para cá sabendo como são as coisas, é justamente porque venho atrás disso. Hoje acho divertido o carro na contramão, a vaca no meio da avenida. Menos divertidos: o barulho ensurdecedor e a poluição assassina, mas também fazem parte do pacote.

Repito o país, mas não repito as cidades. Nesta viagem, visitei Amritsar, Hyderabad e Bangalore. Vem comigo.

Amritsar fica no Punjab, um estado dividido ao meio na partilha entre Índia e Paquistão, em 1947. É a terra sagrada dos sikhs, uma religião monoteísta fundada pelo Guru Nanak nesta Índia de milhares de deuses.

São conhecidos pelos turbantes (não cortam o cabelo nem a barba) e pelo Templo Dourado, um lugar magnífico onde fiquei horas apenas observando as pessoas. Purificado pelos sikhs, segui até a fronteira com o Paquistão, onde, a cada fim de tarde, na linha divisória entre os dois países, acontece uma cerimônia que mistura Sambódromo com Maracanã.

Duas arquibancadas, uma de frente para a outra, se enchem de cidadãos que gritam hinos nacionalistas e pulam de alegria com bandeiras, enquanto soldados desfilam e travam um duelo de danças, uma performance de galhardia bizarra. Tudo separado por uma enorme grade. E armas nucleares.

Torcendo para que tudo continue apenas uma grande performance, segui para Hyderabad, capital de Telangana, no que poderia ser a fronteira entre o norte e o sul da Índia. Queria descobrir o universo dos Nizams, sultões locais que promoveram as artes e as ciências e transformaram a região em uma das mais ricas e cultas do país.

Durante o período britânico, havia príncipes, nawabs, nizams e sultões que governavam seus domínios sob uma mera “supervisão” inglesa. Na independência, puderam escolher se fariam parte do Paquistão ou da Índia. Hyderabad era tão grande e tão rica que o nizam queria torná-la um estado independente — nem Índia, nem Paquistão. Mas as maquinações políticas não deixaram. Foram-se os nawabs, ficaram os monumentos e um pedaço fascinante da história que ligava Hyderabad a Istambul e a Meca.

Bangalore é a mais normal das grandes cidades indianas. Diria que é a Curitiba daqui. Verde, organizada, limpa, afluente, sede de milhares de multinacionais. É a capital mundial dos call centers e back offices.

Os indianos são inteligentíssimos principalmente em direito, contabilidade e tecnologia, falam inglês fluentemente, e o salário médio aqui é uma fração do de Houston ou Londres. Vieram para cá os departamentos de TI, contabilidade, compliance, finanças, atendimento ao cliente e inteligência artificial.

Como Curitiba, Bangalore não tem lá grandes atrações turísticas. Ainda assim, caminhei 15 quilômetros por dia cidade adentro. Devo ter enchido os pulmões de fuligem. Ainda bem que não fumo.

🇬🇧 Traveling to India demands patience — and a fair dose of surrender. The subcontinent could well be another planet. Everything feels familiar yet utterly different — and those differences are what make the mind short-circuit.

Today, I love it. I delve into the streets, the food, the temples, the scents, the markets, and the Ayurvedic massages. But it wasn’t always like this. It took time for things to click.

On my first visit, back in the searing summer of 1997, I was backpacking on a student budget. I felt less like a traveler on holiday and more like someone on a mission — to see the Taj Mahal, Jaipur, and Delhi’s Great Mosque. I’d leave early from the dingy guesthouse where I was staying, haggle with a rickshaw driver who, before taking me to my destination, insisted on stopping at every souvenir shop along the way. I’d see the monuments, snap photos amid a crowd that seemed to want a piece of me, and return to my grimy room, smelly, melting from the heat and collapsing for the rest of the day in fetal position, air conditioner blasting.

Thirty years later, much has changed. India is now one of the world’s largest economies. The country opened up, and globalization has sunk its teeth deep — for better or worse. But perhaps the biggest transformation has been in me.

I’ve learned to understand the country, to drop the same expectations and judgments I’d apply in Santiago or Istanbul. I no longer let my fascination with such an extraordinary place get clouded by practical nuisances — an endless queue, a monstrous traffic jam, or the Kafkaesque bureaucracy that can turn a simple airport transfer into a test of endurance.

If I keep coming back, it’s because I’ve learned to find joy in the very things that once drove me mad — a car going the wrong way, a cow blocking an avenue. The noise and the pollution are still maddening, sure, but they, too, are part of the deal.

I return to the country, but not to the same cities. This time, I visited Amritsar, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. Come along.

Amritsar lies in Punjab, a state split in two during the 1947 partition between India and Pakistan. It’s the sacred land of the Sikhs — a monotheistic religion founded by Guru Nanak in this India of countless gods.

They’re known for their turbans (they don’t cut their hair or beards) and for the Golden Temple, a breathtaking place where I spent hours simply watching people. Purified by the Sikhs, I made my way to the border with Pakistan, where every evening, on the very line dividing the two nations, a ceremony unfolds that feels like Carnival meets football.

Two grandstands face each other, filled with crowds waving flags, singing anthems, and leaping with patriotic energy, while soldiers perform a sort of dance battle — a spectacular, bizarre show of bravado. All separated by a giant gate. And nuclear weapons.

Hoping it all remains just a performance, I continued south to Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana — a city that sits somewhere between India’s north and south. I wanted to uncover the world of the Nizams, the local sultans who once fostered art and science and made the region one of India’s wealthiest and most sophisticated.

During British rule, there were princes, nawabs, nizams, and sultans who governed their own realms under nominal “supervision” from the Crown. When independence came, they could choose between joining Pakistan or India. Hyderabad was so vast and prosperous that its nizam wanted it to become an independent state — neither India nor Pakistan. But politics, of course, had other plans. The privy purse is gone, but the monuments remained — along with a fascinating chapter connecting Hyderabad to Istanbul and Mecca.

Bangalore, on the other hand, is the most “normal” of India’s major cities. Think of it as the Curitiba of India — green, organized, clean, affluent, and home to thousands of multinationals.

It’s the world capital of call centers and back offices. Indians are brilliant — especially in law, accounting, and technology — and their English is flawless. With local salaries being a fraction of what they are in Houston or London, the city became a magnet for departments of IT, finance, compliance, customer service, and AI.

Like Curitiba, Bangalore doesn’t have much in the way of landmarks, but I still managed to walk about 15 kilometers a day, exploring its streets. I probably filled my lungs with soot. Good thing I don’t smoke.

I’m writing this in a rush — my flight leaves soon. New places await, new stories to tell. After all, there are more things between Brazil and India than one could ever experience in a single lifetime. See you next month!

Depois de percorrer parte do Caminho de Santiago pela Via do Norte, na Espanha (#31), viciei-me em caminhadas. As rotas religiosas, sobretudo, me atraem pelo significado histórico e pela quantidade de mosteiros e catedrais ao longo do trajeto. Além disso, têm ótima infraestrutura de sinalização, hospedagem e alimentação. Perrengue chique, para resumir.

Falando em chiqueria, caminhei 320 km pela Suíça seguindo os passos de Fritz, Hans e Greta que, séculos atrás, deixavam seus claustros em Hamburgo, Munique, St. Gallen ou Innsbruck para visitar o santo lá na Galícia. A Via Jakobi corta a Suíça ao meio, beirando morros, lagos e vales, com os Alpes sempre de pano de fundo. Caminhada vigorosa, com vistas quase obscenas de tão voluptuosas e perfeitas. Houve momentos em que me senti, verdadeiramente, no paraíso.

Saí de Konstanz, na fronteira com a Alemanha, e, logo na primeira floresta em que me enfiei, passei por uma menina de capuz vermelho carregando uma cesta de vime e cantarolando. Deve ter sido alucinação — até porque não vi nenhuma vovozinha nos anúncios de óbitos do jornal do dia seguinte. Só o de um lobo atropelado. Coitado. Falando em jornal, cada vale ou vila tem o seu, lido religiosamente em cafés e estações de trem. As notícias locais sempre têm mais importância do que o que acontece do outro lado da montanha.

A Suíça tem múltiplas identidades. Só idiomas oficiais são quatro: alemão, francês, italiano e romanche. O mais exótico — o tal romanche — é curiosamente o mais parecido com o português. Quer ver? Bun di, co vai? Vai bain, engraziel. Só que quase ninguém fala, exceto em vales na fronteira com a Itália — algo como seis senhoras de 90 anos e um etnólogo de Stanford. Para dar algum sentido ao meu trajeto (ao menos para mim), caminhei até onde o alemão deu lugar ao francês. Gastei todo o vocabulário que restou das minhas aulas no Goethe-Institut.

Os suíços são o povo mais inovador do planeta. Também são incansáveis construtores de túneis, estradas e barragens. Gostam de aperfeiçoar o perfeito — por isso, viajar pela Suíça é um prazer. Inventaram o chocolate ao leite e agora desenvolvem uma vaca geneticamente modificada que produz Toddynho (as da Nestlé e Nescau). Cada vilarejo fabrica um tipo diferente de queijo. Nos restaurantes locais, a comida vem sempre da região. Quase enjoei de tanta torta de maçã, abóbora assada e rösti (a famosa “batata suíça”) com ovo. Comia a paisagem, literalmente.

Falando em vacas — responsáveis pela trilha sonora da viagem com seus sinos incessantes —, elas andam chocadas com as tarifas do Trump. Com a queda na demanda de queijos suíços nos EUA, 5% do rebanho do país deverá ser abatido até o fim do ano para equilibrar o preço do leite. Se soubesse, teria abraçado cada uma e agradecido por deixarem a trilha tão pitoresca. Adorei cada cocô em que pisei, o cheiro de estrume, o feno fermentado…

Minha rotina era simples: acordava com o sino das sete, fazia algumas flexões e alongamentos antes do café da manhã — sempre o mesmo, invariável: ovos cozidos, pão, queijo, uma fruta e café. Saía às 8h30 e caminhava quase sem parar até a cidade seguinte, a 15, 20 ou 25 quilômetros de distância. Entre a saída e a chegada, sempre havia um morro enorme para escalar e uma ribanceira escorregadia para descer. Cruzava fazendas, trilhas íngremes, lagos azuis, florestas e campos de milho. Via vacas marrons, pretas, peludas, chifrudas — umas calmas, outras mais temperamentais, que vinham me avisar para parar de tirar fotos.

Por ser uma rota de peregrinação, passei por mosteiros, catedrais, refúgios de santos, basílicas e uma infinidade de cruzes, cristos ensanguentados e capelinhas. Não imaginava que os suíços fossem tão católicos. Achava que a parte francesa fosse católica e a alemã, protestante. Nein, nein, nein. Fiquei surpreso com a devoção dos suíço-alemães. Escutar uma Ave Maria ou um Pai-Nosso em alemão foi uma experiência singular.

Impossível estar na Suíça e não falar de chocolate. Foram eles que inventaram o chocolate ao leite. Nomes como Lindt, Tobler e Suchard criaram fantásticas fábricas. Energia hidrelétrica e leite de qualidade em abundância ajudaram. Até hoje, as melhores favas de cacau do planeta são compradas por suíços, que as transformam em puro prazer. Sentia de longe os aromas de barras de chocolate que tomavam conta de vilas inteiras — e passei por Willy Wonka a caminho do trabalho.

Quando cruzei a fronteira linguística no cantão de Freiburg/Fribourg, estava em terras familiares. Morei no vilarejo de Bulle-en-Gruyères por quatro anos, durante a faculdade. Fiz então outro tipo de passeio: um reencontro com o Vicente de 20 anos, que vagava por ali cheio de questões, nêuras, medos, desejos e sonhos descabidos. Ele me olhou surpreso — não imaginava que, aos 50, eu estaria ali, de mochila nas costas, cabelo grisalho e bem mais feliz e saudável do que ele. Tivemos discussões calorosas, mas terminamos em paz antes do meu trem partir para Lausanne.

Coloquei a região do Lago Léman no trajeto porque a acho um dos lugares mais maravilhosos do planeta. A encosta do Lavaux, com suas plantações de uva, o lago pontilhado de veleiros entre a França e a Suíça, e o paredão branco dos Alpes ao fundo, é patrimônio protegido pela UNESCO. Como ainda carregava as botas de andarilho, aproveitei para explorar as trilhas íngremes com vistas panorâmicas. Era época da colheita das uvas do vinho Chasselas. Emocionei-me várias vezes diante de tanta beleza. E então chegou o dia de acordar do sonho e voltar para casa.

🇬🇧 After walking part of the Camino de Santiago along the Northern Way in Spain (#31), I became addicted to long hikes. Religious routes, in particular, attract me for their historical significance and the number of monasteries and cathedrals along the way. Besides, they have great infrastructure — clear signage, good lodging, and food. “Luxury hardship,” to put it simply.

Speaking of luxury, I walked 320 km across Switzerland, following in the footsteps of Fritz, Hans, and Greta who, centuries ago, left their cloisters in Hamburg, Munich, St. Gallen, or Innsbruck to visit the saint in Galicia. The Via Jakobi cuts Switzerland in half, winding past hills, lakes, and valleys, with the Alps always in the background. A vigorous walk, with views so voluptuous and perfect they bordered on obscene. There were moments when I truly felt I was in paradise.

I started in Konstanz, on the German border, and in the very first forest I entered, I passed a girl in a red hood carrying a wicker basket and humming. It must have been a hallucination — after all, I didn’t see any grandmothers in the obituaries of the next day’s newspaper. Only a wolf hit by a car. Poor thing. Speaking of newspapers, every valley or village has its own, read religiously in cafés and train stations. Local news always matters more than whatever happens on the other side of the mountain.

Switzerland has multiple identities. It has four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. The most exotic one — Romansh — is, curiously, the one that sounds most like Portuguese. Want to see? Bun di, co vai? Vai bain, engraziel. But almost no one speaks it, except in valleys near the Italian border — about six 90-year-old ladies and one ethnologist from Stanford. To give my route some meaning (at least to myself), I walked until German gave way to French. I used up what was left of my vocabulary from classes at the Goethe-Institut.

The Swiss are the most innovative people on the planet. They’re also tireless builders of tunnels, roads, and dams. They like to perfect perfection — that’s why traveling through Switzerland is such a pleasure. They invented milk chocolate and are now developing a genetically modified cow that produces chocolate milk. Every village makes its own kind of cheese. In local restaurants, the food always comes from the region. I nearly got sick of so much apple pie, roasted pumpkin, and rösti with eggs. I was literally eating the landscape.

Speaking of cows — the soundtrack of the trip with their endless bells — they’re shocked by Trump’s tariffs. With the drop in demand for Swiss cheese in the U.S., 5% of the country’s herd is expected to be slaughtered by the end of the year to balance milk prices. If I’d known, I would’ve hugged each one and thanked them for making the trail so picturesque. I loved every cowpat I stepped in, the smell of manure, the fermented hay…

My routine was simple: I’d wake up with the seven o’clock bells, do some push-ups and stretches before breakfast — always the same, without fail: boiled eggs, bread, cheese, a piece of fruit, and coffee. I’d leave around 8:30 and walk almost non-stop to the next town, 15, 20, or 25 kilometers away. Between departure and arrival, there was always a huge hill to climb and a slippery slope to descend. I crossed farms, steep trails, blue lakes, forests, and cornfields. I saw brown, black, shaggy, horned cows — some calm, others more temperamental, coming over to warn me to stop taking pictures.

Since it’s a pilgrimage route, I passed monasteries, cathedrals, saints’ shelters, basilicas, and an endless number of crosses, bleeding Christs, and roadside chapels. I hadn’t imagined the Swiss were so Catholic. I thought the French part was Catholic and the German part Protestant. Nein, nein, nein. I was surprised by the devotion of the Swiss-Germans. Hearing a Hail Mary or an Our Father in German was a unique experience.

It’s impossible to be in Switzerland and not talk about chocolate. They were the ones who invented milk chocolate. Names like Lindt, Tobler, and Suchard built fantastic factories. Hydroelectric power and abundant quality milk helped. To this day, the best cocoa beans in the world are bought by the Swiss, who turn them into pure pleasure. I could smell from afar the chocolate aromas taking over entire villages — and I passed by Willy Wonka on his way to work.

When I crossed the linguistic border in the canton of Freiburg/Fribourg, I was on familiar ground. I had lived in the village of Bulle-en-Gruyères for four years during college. I then took a different kind of walk: a reunion with the 20-year-old Vicente who used to wander around there, full of questions, neuroses, fears, desires, and absurd dreams. He looked at me in surprise — he never imagined that, at 50, I’d be there, backpack on, gray-haired, and much happier and healthier than he was. We had heated arguments but made peace before my train left for Lausanne.

I included the Lake Geneva region in my route because I think it’s one of the most wonderful places on the planet. The Lavaux hillside, with its vineyards, the lake dotted with sailboats between France and Switzerland, and the white wall of the Alps in the background, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Still wearing my hiking boots, I took advantage of the steep trails with panoramic views. It was harvest season for Chasselas wine grapes. I was moved to tears several times by so much beauty. And then came the day to wake up from the dream and go back home.

Durante boa parte de setembro, caminhei. De mochila nas costas, subi montanhas, atravessei florestas, cruzei rios e lagos cinematográficos ao longo da rota 4, a Via Jakobi, na Suíça. Em 18 dias de caminhada, completei 320 km. Visitei vilarejos medievais, cidades fortificadas e muitas fazendas. Vi mais vacas do que gente.

Todas as estradas que não levam a Roma, levam a Compostela. A Via Jakobi é o caminho por onde peregrinos do norte europeu passavam a caminho da Espanha. Meu recorte foi a zona germânica da Suíça. Enquanto pudesse comer rösti e dizer grüezi, caminharia.

Já me considero um viajante caminhante. Devo ter somado quase mil quilômetros, se juntar Oviedo–Compostela e Lisboa–Fátima. Viajar tão dentro da paisagem, tão em sintonia com o tempo e com a natureza, vicia.

Ainda estou em trânsito e, de certa forma, caminhando. Por isso, fico por aqui com a promessa de transformar esse trailer numa história bem contada, com detalhes (picantes e informativos) e imagens — coisa que não consigo fazer no celular. Sou do século passado.

🇬🇧 For most of September, I walked. With a backpack on my shoulders, I climbed mountains, crossed forests, and passed through cinematic rivers and lakes along Route 4, the Via Jakobi, in Switzerland. In 18 days of walking, I completed 320 km. I visited medieval villages, fortified towns, and many farms. I saw more cows than people.

All roads that don’t lead to Rome lead to Compostela. The Via Jakobi is the path once taken by pilgrims from northern Europe on their way to Spain. My stretch was through the German-speaking part of Switzerland. As long as I could eat rösti and say grüezi, I would keep walking.

I already consider myself a walking traveler. I must have covered nearly a thousand kilometers if I add up Oviedo–Compostela and Lisbon–Fátima. Traveling so deeply within the landscape, so in tune with time and nature, is addictive.

I’m still in transit and, in a way, still walking. So I’ll leave it here for now, with the promise of turning this trailer into a well-told story — full of details (spicy and informative) and images — something I can’t do from my phone. I’m from the last century.

Confesso que fui um adolescente insuportável, que achava as aulas de História do Brasil um saco. Adorava a Suméria, os astecas e o Renascimento. Mas, quando o assunto eram as capitanias hereditárias, Canudos, a Farroupilha ou o Estado Novo, morria de preguiça. Teve um trabalho sobre Tiradentes, no qual tive que ler um livro (bem fininho) sobre a Inconfidência Mineira, que eu simplesmente não consegui entender nada. Em sala, fizemos o julgamento de Tiradentes, e só então ficou legal. Fui escolhido para ser o mártir e me fantasiei de Jesus*. Quando soube que meus amigos seriam enviados para Angola e eu seria esquartejado, comecei a gritar “injustiça!, injustiça!”, simulando um ataque epilético. A sala de aula virou uma baderna. Teve até gelo seco (pelo menos na minha imaginação). Acho que a professora nunca mais sugeriu tal atividade nos anos seguintes.

* Até antes da viagem, eu misturava na cabeça as histórias de Tiradentes e Aleijadinho com Jesus.

Com essa lembrança, encarei minha semi-ignorância ao visitar Ouro Preto, Congonhas, Tiradentes e São João del Rei. Com a ajuda do ChatGPT, descobri Minas com olhos novos, tal qual um emboaba*. E foi fascinante. A Inconfidência foi contemporânea da Revolução Francesa. As reclamações que os brasileiros faziam da Coroa portuguesa eram muito parecidas com as dos americanos recém-independentes. Todo mundo tentava esconder um pouco de ouro da Receita Federal, inclusive dentro de santos ocos feitos de madeira. Por que pagar impostos tão altos? Pro quinto dos infernos, portugueses descarados! Esse quinto era 20% de taxa sobre o ouro** explorado nas Minas Gerais, muito mais alto do que o atual IOF de 3,5%.

*Emboaba é forasteiro na língua tupi e é como os paulistas, que se achavam os donos do pedaço, chamavam quem vinha de fora para explorar ouro | **Ainda hoje sai muito ouro do Brasil escondido, não mais em santos do pau-oco, mas em malas e contêineres. Matéria iluminadora na Piauí de agosto.

No dia em que parisienses acalorados invadiam a Bastilha em busca dos brioches da Maria Antonieta, em 1789, em Ouro Preto, a cidade mais rica da colônia, fazia frio, e Joaquim José, com vários compadres, confabulavam para mandar os portugueses embora. Alguém exclamou, com vocabulário de advogado sabichão: “Libertas quae sera tamen”, que Bárbara Heliodora* traduziu em língua nativa para “liberdade ainda que tardia”. Hoje a frase está na bandeira de MG, junto com o triângulo vermelho sobre fundo branco.

* Foi inconfidente, teve o marido enviado para o degredo e é uma das primeiras poetas nacionais.

As igrejas, os edifícios públicos, o casario eram uma cópia das vilas portuguesas. São muito mais antigos do que Hong Kong e São Petersburgo. O que chamávamos de História do Brasil nos anos 1980, que começa com a chegada de Cabral, sem contar os milênios de ocupação indígena, é bastante antigo. O Novo Mundo não é mais tão novo assim.

Eu só tinha visitado Minas para ir a Inhotim. Desta vez, foi uma imersão de seis dias, e me apaixonei pelo sotaque dos mineiros, pela simpatia das pessoas, pelo autêntico pão de queijo e pela mistura de cidades antiquíssimas com o modernismo de Belo Horizonte, a incubadora de Brasília. Os restaurantes da Savassi, bairro nobre de BH, esparramados pelas calçadas arborizadas, ficam cheios o dia todo. O melhor é que não precisa de visto nem de passaporte. Estou adorando (re)descobrir o Brasil.

🇬🇧 I confess I was an obnoxious teenager who thought Brazilian history classes were a drag. I loved Sumer, the Aztecs, and the Renaissance. But when the subject was the Colonization, Canudos or the Estado Novo, I couldn’t care less. There was this assignment about Tiradentes, where I had to read a (very thin) book about the Minas Conspiracy, and I simply couldn’t understand a thing. In class, we staged Tiradentes’ trial, and only then did it get interesting. I was chosen to be the martyr and dressed up like Jesus. When I found out my friends were being sent to Angola while I was going to be cut in pieces, I started screaming “Injustice! Injustice!” pretending to have an epileptic seizure. The classroom turned into complete chaos. There was even dry ice (at least in my imagination). I think the teacher never suggested that activity again in the following years.

With that memory in mind, I faced my semi-ignorance when visiting Ouro Preto, Congonhas, Tiradentes, and São João del Rei. With ChatGPT’s help, I discovered Minas Gerais with fresh eyes, like a true outsider. And it was fascinating. The Minas Conspiracy happened around the same time as the French Revolution. The complaints Brazilians had about the Portuguese Crown were very similar to those of the newly independent Americans. Everyone tried to hide a bit of gold from the tax collectors, even inside hollow wooden saints. Why pay such high taxes? To hell with it, shameless Portuguese!

On the hot summer day when Parisians stormed the Bastille looking for Marie Antoinette’s brioches, in 1789, in Ouro Preto—the richest city in the colony—it was cold, and Joaquim José, along with several comrades, was conspiring to kick out the Portuguese. Someone exclaimed, in pompous lawyer vocabulary: “Libertas quae sera tamen”, which Bárbara Heliodora translated into the native tongue as “liberty, even if late.” Today, that phrase is on the flag of Minas Gerais, along with a red triangle on a white background.

The churches, public buildings, and colonial houses were copies of Portuguese towns. They’re much older than Hong Kong or St. Petersburg. What we called Brazilian history back in the 1980s, starting with Cabral’s arrival and ignoring the millennia of Indigenous occupation, is actually quite old. The New World isn’t so new anymore.

I had only been to Minas to visit Inhotim. This time, it was a six-day immersion, and I fell in love with the Minas accent, the warmth of the people, the authentic pão de queijo, and the mix of ancient towns with the modernism of Belo Horizonte, the incubator of Brasília. The restaurants in Savassi, an upscale neighborhood in BH, spread across leafy sidewalks, stay full all day long. The best part is that you don’t need a visa or passport. I’m loving rediscovering Brazil.

Sabe quando o ruído do mundo anda tão alto que até pensar fica difícil? Sou escolado em meditação. Tenho uma vida bastante tranquila. Faço uso parcimonioso de álcool e redes sociais. Durmo bem. Mesmo assim, minha atenção tem sido tragada pelas atualidades, já que ainda não virei um hermitão.

Então, pensei em dedicar esse pequeno tempo que temos juntos, uma vez por mês, para respirarmos profundamente e pensarmos em coisas bonitas. Coisas que eu adoraria ter vivenciado durante o mês, para te contar enquanto perdia tempo preocupado com a tonga da milonga do kabuletê.

Adoraria ter dançado com minha mãe numa festa de casamento, experimentado aulas de hot yoga, comido pizza na casa de amigos e dado risada de bobagens. Quem sabe até esticado um fim de semana em Buenos Aires para tomar sorvete do Rapanui e ficar absorto com o alaranjado dos céus nos entardeceres de inverno. Poderia ter cozinhado couve-flor com tahine, abraçado um cavalo, bebido chá preto dos Açores, visto alguma exposição de arte e escutado minha sobrinha contar sobre seu encontro com leões no Serengeti.

Melhor ainda se tivesse lido um manuscrito novo de uma amiga, escutado um romance em francês e caminhado no meio do mato. Mas o mês passou voando e já não sei o que foi realidade real ou virtual, criação da minha cabeça ou da inteligência artificial. E você?

🇬🇧 You know when the noise of the world gets so loud that even thinking becomes hard? I’m well-versed in meditation. I live a pretty peaceful life. I use alcohol and social media sparingly. I sleep well. Even so, my attention has been swallowed up by current events (since I haven’t quite become a hermit yet).

So I thought I’d dedicate this little time we have together once a month to take a deep breath and think about beautiful things. Things I wish I had experienced during the month, so I could tell you about them instead of wasting time worrying about bullshit.

I wish I had danced with my mom at a wedding, tried hot yoga classes, eaten pizza at a friend’s place, and laughed at silly things. Maybe even stretched a weekend in Buenos Aires to have Rapanui ice cream and get lost in the orange hues of winter sunsets. I could have cooked cauliflower with tahini, hugged a horse, sipped black tea from the Azores, visited an Art exhibit, and listened to my niece talk about her encounter with lions in the Serengeti.

Even better if I had read a new manuscript from a friend, listened to a novel in French, and walked in the woods. But the month flew by, and now I’m not sure what was real or virtual—something my mind made up or artificial intelligence created.

Alguns lugares despertam minha curiosidade só pelo nome: Tânger, Ceuta, Gibraltar. Tão próximos e, ao mesmo tempo, tão distintos, eles se encaixam naturalmente em uma única viagem. Já pertenceram ao mesmo reino em diferentes períodos da história, mas hoje estão separados por fronteiras mais complexas do que as águas do Mediterrâneo que os dividem.

Tânger, na ponta norte da África, é um ponto de passagem de civilizações há milênios. Minha fascinação pela cidade começou ao ler O tempo entre costuras, da espanhola María Dueñas (tem também uma série na Netflix). O livro retrata Tânger como um mosaico vibrante de culturas, espiões, contrabandistas, refugiados e idiomas. Tudo reunido em um só lugar. Até 1956, Tânger era uma Zona Internacional, uma espécie de terra de ninguém que atraiu escritores e andarilhos como Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams e William Burroughs. Um dos meus personagens históricos favoritos, Ibn Batuta, que viajou pelo mundo islâmico duas vezes mais que Marco Polo e é considerado um dos primeiros cronistas de viagem, nasceu ali. Visitar seu túmulo foi como uma peregrinação ao próprio peregrino.

Cheguei à cidade no trem-bala vindo do aeroporto de Casablanca, com uma parada em Rabat, antes de me refugiar em um hotel dos anos 1950 no centro histórico congelado no tempo. Os cafés e restaurantes pareciam cenários de cinema. Dava para ver a Espanha do outro lado do estreito, e fiquei imaginando os barcos que traziam os últimos refugiados muçulmanos de Al-Andalus durante a Reconquista Católica, em 1492. Entre eles estava o sultão Boabdil, que chorou ao se despedir de Granada. Antes disso, em 1471, os portugueses já testavam suas estratégias de conquista com incursões em Tânger e Ceuta, meu próximo destino.

Ceuta fica a apenas 45 minutos de Tânger, por uma estrada íngreme e sinuosa. Embora minúscula, a cidade espanhola se impõe com seus muros de concreto, arame farpado e torres de vigilância que avançam sobre o território marroquino. A travessia da fronteira é feita a pé, passando por imigração e alfândega. Carimbo no passaporte e pronto. Bem-vindo à União Europeia. Um trajeto curto, mas um salto para outra realidade.

Ceuta já foi portuguesa, mas no vai e vem entre Lisboa e Madri, acabou ficando com a Espanha. A entrada no enclave se dá pelas muralhas do forte, e a avenida à beira-mar poderia muito bem ser em Marbella ou Palma de Maiorca. Não há muito o que ver ou fazer. É um lugar para simplesmente estar. Um desses pontos anacrônicos, vestígios do tempo de impérios. Pelo menos há os confortos europeus: sinal de celular incluído no meu plano, euros, Mercadona, Zara, pan con tomate, helado de turrón — e muitos soldados bonitos.

Para chegar à Espanha continental, peguei um ferry até o porto de Algeciras. A segurança é reforçada por conta do tráfico humano e da imigração ilegal, afinal, uma vez em solo europeu, o espaço Schengen permite que qualquer um suma do radar. Fui farejado por cães, revistado três vezes, e precisei explicar aos oficiais as intenções de um brasileiro vindo do Marrocos. Mas nada além disso. Assim que o barco atracou, corri para pegar o ônibus em direção à Línea de la Concepción, uma cidade onde uma linha reta separa a Espanha do Reino Unido.

Gibraltar tem um formato curioso. É um rochedo colossal “ancorado” no continente, como se uma mão gigante o tivesse colocado ali. Na mitologia grega, um dos doze trabalhos de Hércules foi abrir uma fenda para que o Atlântico inundasse o que hoje é o Mediterrâneo. Foi justamente o penhasco de Gibraltar que ele usou como apoio. Atualmente, todas as ruas e estruturas da colônia britânica estão penduradas no morro. Não há como se locomover sem subir ou descer rampas e degraus — muitos degraus.

A Espanha cedeu Gibraltar ao Reino Unido em 1713, após uma das tantas guerras entre os países. Cedeu, mas se arrependeu. Até hoje pede a devolução. Como os ingleses não devolvem, os espanhóis adoram dificultar as coisas. Franco, por exemplo, fechou a fronteira em 1969. Ela só reabriu em 1985. Tudo precisava chegar de barco, direto de Londres. Achei que meu hotel fosse perto do mar. No mapa do celular ele aparecia a quatro quadras da orla. Mas, na prática, ele ficava no alto de uma colina, bem acima do nível do mar. Um teleférico passava bem em frente à minha sacada, rumo ao topo do morro. É claro que subi para admirar a vista. Lá em cima vive uma banda de macacos que passa o dia catando piolhos uns nos outros.

Achei Gibraltar fascinante. Mais uma dessas idiossincrasias europeias ao estilo de Liechtenstein, Mônaco, San Marino ou Vaticano. Confesso que me deu um pouco de agonia, por ser tudo muito apertado e exigir bastante energia para qualquer programa. Até sair para tomar um sorvete precisa-se preparo físico e coxas firmes. Tive tempo de me recuperar durante as cinco horas de ônibus até Sevilha, onde visitei a Feria de Abril, um evento tão animado quanto o Carnaval, abraçado com entusiasmo pelos sevilhanos. Me senti a única pessoa na cidade sem leque, castanholas, cavalo ou charrete.

Sempre adiante, nos passos de Ibn Batuta, cheguei finalmente a Lisboa, onde fui acolhido pelo conforto da língua e pelo abraço de amigos brasileiros. Lavei as roupas, alonguei os músculos, e dias depois parti para a caminhada que narrei na newsletter #38. Do aeroporto de Casablanca (voo vindo de São Paulo) ao aeroporto do Porto (voo de volta pro Rio), com trens, táxis, barcos, ônibus e muitos quilômetros a pé, me senti realizado e ainda mais viciado nesse tipo de viagem em que me torno parte da paisagem.

🇬🇧 Some places stir my curiosity by name alone like Tangier, Ceuta, Gibraltar. So close together, yet so distinct, they’re destinations that naturally align into one journey. United under the same kingdom multiple times, today they’re separated by borders more intricate than the waters of the Mediterranean that divide them.

Tangier, perched on the northern tip of Africa, has been a crossroads of civilizations for millennia. I first became fascinated with the city while reading The Time in Between by Spanish author María Dueñas (there’s also a Netflix series). The novel paints Tangier as a swirling mosaic of cultures, spies, smugglers, refugees, and languages, all converging in a single city. Until 1956, it was an International Zone, a liminal place that attracted writers and vagabonds like Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams, and William Burroughs. One of my favorite historical figures, Ibn Battuta, who traveled twice as far as Marco Polo and is considered one of the first travel writers, was born there. Visiting his tomb felt like a pilgrimage to the pilgrim himself.

I arrived via high-speed train from Casablanca’s airport, with a stop in Rabat, before retreating to a 1950s-era hotel in the historic center frozen in time. The restaurants and cafés looked like a movie set. From the coast, I could see Spain across the strait and imagined the boats that once carried the last Muslim refugees from Al-Andalus during the Catholic Reconquista of 1492. Among them was Sultan Boabdil, who famously wept as he left Granada. Before that, in 1471, the Portuguese had already begun their conquests with raids on both Tangier and Ceuta, my next stop.

Ceuta lies just 45 minutes away via a steep, winding road. Though tiny, the Spanish enclave looms large with its concrete walls, barbed wire, and watchtowers that protrude into Moroccan territory. You must cross immigration and customs on foot. Passport stamped, I stepped into the European Union. A short journey, but a leap into a different world.

Ceuta was once Portuguese, but in the tug-of-war between Lisbon and Madrid, it eventually landed with Spain. Entry is through the fortress walls, and the seaside promenade could easily pass for Marbella or Palma de Mallorca. There’s little to do or see. It’s a place simply to be. One of those historical anomalies, a remnant of empire. Still, it offered some European comforts: mobile coverage on my plan, euros, Mercadona, Zara, pan con tomate, helado de turrón and plenty of handsome military men.

To reach mainland Spain, I took a ferry to Algeciras. Security was tight due to human trafficking and illegal immigration. Once across, the EU’s open borders make it easy for anyone to vanish. I was sniffed by dogs, unpacked my backpack three times, and had to clarify to the officers the intentions of a Brazilian traveling from Morocco. Nothing major. Once docked, I rushed to catch a bus toward La Línea de la Concepción, a town where a simple line separates Spain from the United Kingdom.

Gibraltar is strange in shape: an enormous rock “moored” to the continent, as if a giant hand had dragged it into place. In Greek mythology, one of Hercules’ labors was to split the mountains and let the Atlantic flood what is now the Mediterranean. Gibraltar’s cliff was his lever. Today, all the colony’s streets and buildings cling to that massive hill. You can’t get around without climbing ramps, stairs, and more stairs.

Spain ceded Gibraltar to Britain in 1713 after one of their many wars. But it’s a loss Spain never got over. To this day, they petition for its return. Franco even closed the border in 1969; it didn’t reopen until 1985. Back then, everything had to arrive by boat from London. I had assumed my hotel was near the shore. It looked just four blocks from the sea on the map. In reality, it sat high atop a hill, well above sea level. A cable car passed right outside my window, heading up to the summit. Naturally, I went there for the view. At the top lives a band of monkeys who spend their days grooming each other.

I found Gibraltar fascinating. Another one of Europe’s oddities like Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, or the Vatican. It did give me a touch of claustrophobia, though. Everything’s packed in, and even the simplest outing, like getting an ice cream, demands stamina and strong legs. I recovered during the five-hour bus ride to Seville, where I visited the Feria de Abril, a festival as lively as Carnival. The Sevillians throw themselves into it with passion. I felt like the only person in the city without a fan, castanets, a horse, or a carriage.

Still moving forward, in the spirit of Ibn Battuta, I finally arrived in Lisbon, where I was embraced by the familiarity of the Portuguese language and the warmth of Brazilian friends. I did laundry, stretched my legs, and a few days later, set off on the 300km-walk described in newsletter #38. From Casablanca airport (after a flight from São Paulo) to Porto airport (en route to Rio), with trains, taxis, ferries, buses, and countless kilometers on foot I felt fulfilled and more addicted than ever to these journeys where I become part of the landscape.

Desde pequeno, olho para o horizonte cheio de curiosidade. O que há além daquele morro ou do lado de lá do oceano? Seguia as linhas nos atlas, os dedos percorrendo trajetos imaginários, até me dar conta de que tais linhas começavam na porta de casa. Pouco a pouco, fui tecendo um emaranhado de rotas, costurando viagens inspiradas em livros, histórias e acasos. O último ponto-cruz dei em Casablanca, onde um avião da Royal Air Maroc me largou no começo de maio de 2025. Tracei um percurso por terra e mar até chegar ao centro de Portugal.

Entre Casablanca, Rabat, Tânger, Ceuta, Gibraltar, Sevilha e Lisboa, usei táxis, barcos e ônibus — uma mini-odisseia entre África e Europa, sobre a qual prometo contar com mais detalhes na nossa próxima correspondência. Até porque parece que faz um ano que tudo aquilo aconteceu. Hoje fico com o fresco, que ainda não se esfumaçou na minha timeline mental: a caminhada de 300 km que fiz por Portugal.

Em Lisboa, vesti as botas, joguei a mochila nas costas e saí caminhando rumo ao norte, num trajeto em que Portugal me expôs seus detalhes mais miúdos. Vilarejos, pastelarias familiares, pracinhas de igreja, maneirismos linguísticos, cafetarias com Benfica e Sporting numa partida eterna na TV. Passei por Estoril, Sintra, Ericeira, Óbidos e Nazaré — e por lugares nunca dantes navegados, como Peniche, Alcobaça, Batalha, Aljubarrota, além de quilômetros e mais quilômetros de praias deslumbrantes preenchendo a rota. Portugal em simbiose com o Atlântico. Eu, em simbiose com a rota.

Impossível caminhar pela cultura portuguesa sem compará-la à nossa. A familiaridade do idioma é, de cara, o primeiro ponto — mesmo quando as palavras usadas são outras e as vogais engolidas. A paragem do ônibus, as beatas dos cigarros, as ementas dos restaurantes com seus sandes, pregos e bitoques, o rés do chão, “premir” botões. Lembrava do Latim em Pó, do Caetano Galindo, livro que não canso de recomendar.

A familiaridade vem também com as ruas, calçadas, telhados, janelas e gradis, tão iguais aos de qualquer cidade brasileira — incluindo as placas de “cão bravo”. Os tais cães também ficam pulando e latindo, enlouquecidos, com a mera aproximação de um caminhante. Latem em português, é claro.

Presentes nas cidades pequeninas e transbordantes nos lugares mais turísticos, estão os brasileiros. Isso aqui é um concentrado de Brasil, onde se escutam sotaques de norte a sul da ex-colônia, com brasileiros de todas as cores e sabores. Cerca de 400 mil vivem aqui legalmente, e 1,2 milhão visitam a cada ano. Fora o fato de que gostamos de aparecer, né?

Terminei a caminhada em Fátima para ter um destino metafísico, um lugar de aparições, devoção e peregrinação. Só que o aprendizado, quem dá é sempre o caminho. Cada dia há uma nova questão que aparece do nada — entre um desvio e uma trilha, um erro de rota e uma boa pedida para o almoço. Teria levado menos bagagem. Poderia ter me livrado do extra. Poderia isso, aquilo… mas foi o que foi — e viajar comigo sempre é bom. Mas bom também foi retornar para Lisboa: uma curta viagem de ônibus de 1h30 para cobrir o que fiz em duas semanas a pé.

A propósito, a palavra vagamundo do título aprendi com o escritor português Ferreira de Castro, que me foi apresentado em um livro por Drauzio Varella, e cujo museu apareceu do nada na minha frente em Sintra. Assim como eu, adorava viajar e contar sobre os lugares por onde passava, numa época em que as únicas mídias eram livros e jornais. Acredito que sejam ideais, pois, quando o assunto é viajar, nada melhor do que fomentarmos a imaginação de quem lê.

Ao longo destes 300 km, tudo foi novidade. Não busquei vídeos, youtubers, tiktokers, influencers, dicas online que me antecipassem o prazer de ver os lugares com olhos de surpresa e admiração. Levei comigo apenas um livro da história de Portugal, pois sigo intrigado com o fato de um país tão pequeno ter conquistado lugares tão exóticos e distantes. Com esta e outras questões em mente, me despeço por hoje. Até o fim de junho (com a história da travessia do estreito de Gibraltar).

🇬🇧 Since I was a child, I’ve looked at the horizon full of curiosity. What lies beyond that hill or on the other side of the ocean? I used to follow the lines on atlases, my fingers tracing imaginary routes, until I realized those lines started right at my doorstep. Little by little, I began weaving a tangle of routes, stitching together trips inspired by books, stories, and serendipity. The last stitch I made was in Casablanca, where a Royal Air Maroc plane dropped me off in early May 2025. From there, I mapped a journey by land and sea that led me to the heart of Portugal.

Between Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Ceuta, Gibraltar, Seville, and Lisbon, I used taxis, boats, and buses — a mini-odyssey between Africa and Europe, which I promise to tell you more about in our next correspondence. Mostly because it already feels like a year ago. Today, I’ll stick with what’s still fresh in my mental timeline: the 300 km walk I did through Portugal.

In Lisbon, I put on my boots, threw my backpack over my shoulders, and began walking north, on a route where Portugal revealed its most subtle details. Small villages, family-run pastry shops, church squares, linguistic quirks, cafés playing an eternal match between Benfica and Sporting on TV. I passed through Estoril, Sintra, Ericeira, Óbidos, and Nazaré — and through places never before explored, like Peniche, Alcobaça, Batalha, Aljubarrota, not to mention mile after mile of stunning beaches along the way. Portugal in symbiosis with the Atlantic. I, in symbiosis with the route.

It’s impossible to walk through Portuguese culture without comparing it to ours in Brazil. The familiarity of the language is, of course, the first thing — even when different words are used and vowels get swallowed. The paragem for the bus, the beatas for cigarette butts, restaurant ementas with their sandes, prego and bitoque, the rés-do-chão, “premir” buttons.

The familiarity also comes through in the streets, sidewalks, rooftops, windows, and railings, so similar to those in any Brazilian city — including the “Beware of the Dog” signs. The dogs themselves also bark and jump around like mad at the mere approach of a passerby. They bark in Portuguese, of course.

Everywhere — from tiny towns to tourist hotspots — there are Brazilians. This place is a concentrate of Brazil, where you hear accents from north to south of the former colony, with Brazilians of all colors and flavors. Around 400,000 live here legally, and 1.2 million visit each year. Not to mention, we do love to stand out, right?

I ended the walk in Fátima, choosing a metaphysical destination — a place of apparitions, devotion, and pilgrimage. But the lessons always come from the path itself. Each day a new question pops up out of nowhere — between a detour and a trail, a wrong turn and a good lunch spot. I would’ve packed less. I could’ve ditched the extras. Could’ve this, could’ve that… but it was what it was — and traveling with myself is always a good thing. But returning to Lisbon was also good: a short 1.5-hour bus ride to cover what had taken me two weeks to walk.

Over these 300 km, everything was new. I didn’t look up videos, YouTubers, TikTokers, influencers, or online tips that might have spoiled the pleasure of seeing places with fresh eyes and wonder. I only brought one book about the history of Portugal, as I’m still intrigued by how such a small country managed to conquer such exotic and distant lands. Desembarquei no pequeno terminal de Tefé, no coração da Amazônia, abaixo de cortinas de chuva tropical que, em poucos segundos, transformaram a pista do aeroporto em mais um afluente do rio Amazonas. No táxi até o porto, quase nos transformamos em canoa, de tanta água que escorria por ladeiras e barrancos. Por sorte, a lancha da pousada tinha toldo firme e minha mochila era impermeável. Depois de cinco horas entre Curitiba e Manaus, mais uma até Tefé e outra hora na lancha, a Pousada Uacari me abraçou, e comemorei as boas-vindas com suco de taperebá e bolinho de jambu.

A reserva Mamirauá, maior que o Líbano ou o Catar, com um milhão de hectares de mata preservada, fica escondida entre o rio Amazonas — que por ali ainda é oficialmente chamado de Solimões — e o Japurá. É um dos locais de maior biodiversidade do planeta e um exemplo de sucesso de desenvolvimento sustentável nesta imensidão que é o Brasil. A pousada flutuante Uacari ajuda na geração de renda para as comunidades locais e recebe curiosos por natureza.

A grande atração é a Natureza (essa com letra maiúscula), que surpreende, acolhe, assusta e ensina. Dupliquei meu vocabulário com os nomes dos peixes, pássaros, árvores e frutas que conheci: pirarucu, tambaqui, tucunaré, araracanga, uirapuru, uacari, bacuri, bacurau, apuí, samaúma, cumaru — todas presentes nos dicionários da língua portuguesa (ou melhor, brasileira). Dei-me conta da variedade de povos e línguas que habitam a região. São tantas lendas, conhecimentos e tanta diversidade que deixamos em segundo plano. Uma miríade de possibilidades de Brasil. Já pensou se fôssemos bilíngues em português e nheengatu?

Além dos guias da pousada — gente que avista bicho-preguiça ou tucano com uma facilidade surpreendente — estive com as histórias e causos do Dr. Drauzio Varella, que lançou um livro sobre o Rio Negro na mesma semana. Eu, que já gosto de aprender, fiquei com vontade de seguir explorando adiante. Em vez de voltar para Manaus, poderia pegar um barco até Tabatinga, na fronteira com o Peru. Ou subir para a terra Yanomami e visitar o Yaripo, a 3 mil metros de altitude. Para os não versados, Yaripo é o Pico da Neblina — ou Montanha do Vento, morada dos espíritos, o ponto mais alto do Brasil.

No entanto, me satisfiz (e muito) com os passeios de canoa sob a copa das árvores alagadas, em busca de onça. Do pôr do sol com açaí e tucumã na lagoa Uareré. Das garças desfilando em frente ao quarto da pousada, desviando dos jacarés. De dormir acima dos pirarucus barulhentos e acordar com o grito dos bugios, que eu confundia com turbinas de avião. De esperar o sol nascer em meio a botos-cor-de-rosa enlouquecidos ao redor do barco. De me sentir tão pequeno e, ao mesmo tempo, tão parte de tudo aquilo. Não fui mordido nem envenenado. Não peguei dengue, cólera nem febre amarela. Voltei com algumas picadas de maruins — pernilongos insistentes de tamanho amazônico — e totalmente contaminado pelo desejo de que tudo aquilo siga existindo, apesar de tudo.

🇬🇧 I landed at the small terminal in Tefé, in the heart of the jungle, under curtains of tropical rain that, in a matter of seconds, turned the airport runway into yet another tributary of the Amazon River. On the taxi ride to the port, we nearly became a canoe, so much water was rushing down slopes and embankments. Luckily, the lodge’s boat had a sturdy canopy and my backpack was waterproof. After five hours between Curitiba and Manaus, one more hour to Tefé, and another on the boat, the Uacari Jungle Lodge welcomed me with open arms, and I celebrated my arrival with tapereba juice and jambu fritters.

The Mamirauá Reserve — larger than Lebanon or Qatar, with a million hectares of preserved rainforest — is tucked between the Amazon River (which is still officially called the Solimões in that region) and the Japurá. It’s one of the most biodiverse places on Earth and a successful example of sustainable development in this vast land called Brazil. The floating Uacari Lodge helps generate income for local communities and welcomes those who are curious by nature.

The main attraction is Nature (with a capital “N”), which surprises, embraces, frightens, and teaches. I doubled my vocabulary with the names of fish, birds, trees, and fruits I got to know: pirarucu, tambaqui, tucunare, araracanga, uirapuru, uacari, bacuri, bacurau, apui, samauma, cumaru — all found in Portuguese (or rather, Brazilian) dictionaries. I realized the variety of peoples and languages that inhabit the region. So many legends, so much knowledge, and such diversity that Brazilians often forget or ignore. A myriad of possible Brazils. Just imagine if we were bilingual in Portuguese and Nheengatu?

In addition to the lodge guides — people who spot sloths and toucans with surprising ease — I was also in the company of the stories and tales of Dr. Drauzio Varella, the famous doctor, who released a book about the Rio Negro that very week. I, who already love learning, felt the urge to keep exploring. Instead of going back to Manaus, I could take a boat to Tabatinga, on the border with Peru. Or head north to Yanomami land and visit Yaripo, at 3,000 meters above sea level. For those unfamiliar, Yaripo is the Pico da Neblina — or “Mountain of the Wind,” home of the spirits and Brazil's highest point.

However, I was more than satisfied with canoe rides under the canopy of flooded trees in search of jaguars. With sunsets paired with açaí and tucuma at Uareré Lagoon. With egrets parading in front of my lodge room, dodging caimans. With sleeping above noisy pirarucus and waking to the sounds of howler monkeys, which I mistook for airplane turbines. With waiting for the sunrise amid pink river dolphins gone mad around the boat. With feeling so small and, at the same time, so much a part of it all. I wasn’t bitten or poisoned. I didn’t catch dengue, cholera, or yellow fever. I returned with a few bites from maruins — insistent, Amazon-sized mosquitoes — and completely infected with the desire for all of it to continue existing, despite everything.

Na mitologia grega, Cassandra é filha dos reis de Troia, por quem Apolo se apaixona. De presente, ele lhe concede o poder de prever o futuro. Mas Cassandra é independente, não está a fim de ser esposa de ninguém, muito menos de ter filhos e morar no Olimpo. Sou um bom observador do cotidiano e me considero bem informado sobre história, ciência e coisas da vida. Não cometo o mesmo erro de Sísifo, outro personagem mitológico. Ele era inteligente e sagaz, mas sua arrogância o castigou. Todos os dias acorda e precisa carregar uma pedra montanha acima. Tento manter uma abordagem mais próxima à de um amigo confidente, com conversas, advertências e indicações de livros, podcasts, artigos, filmes, revistas, sites recheados de informação e dicas. Mas percebo que dou gritos ao vazio. Cassandra enlouqueceu. Eu quero me salvar.

Talvez, mais do que Cassandra ou Sísifo, eu esteja buscando os poderes de Zeus, que tudo controla e em tudo manda. Mas, em pleno século XXI, onde os deuses têm burnout ou foram substituídos por likes, mãozinhas em oração e algoritmos, quem sou eu, um simples cinquentão bem-intencionado, querendo que as pessoas se cuidem, não sofram, não abusem, se espertem, se preparem? Impossível dar conta, afinal, me importo com um longo cardápio: pais, irmãos, sobrinhas, primas, parentes, amigas, filhos dos amigos, pais dos amigos, florestas, a paz, o amor etc.

Então, agora é assim: quer tomar sol ao meio-dia sem protetor solar? Quer beber a sétima caipirinha junto com os remédios para pressão alta ou demência? Quer ir à festa durante a pandemia? Quer passar cinco horas por dia no Instagram? Quer beber refrigerante zero? Dirigir se cinto? Fumar? Deixar o celular ligado na cabeceira durante a noite? Votar em crápulas? Acreditar em fake news e seguir deepfakes? Problema seu! A partir de agora, Cassandra não vê mais nada, Sísifo virou jardineiro e Zeus foi fazer ioga.

Se tivesse que escolher um deus grego da vez, ou da vida, gostaria de ser Hermes, que protege os viajantes, tem asas nos pés e carrega aquele bastão mágico, o caduceu, que ajuda a resolver conflitos, curar males e espalhar harmonia por onde passa. Mas, para isso, é preciso muita meditação, respiração de fogo, contrações do mula bandha e chá de camomila. E, no fim, cada um de nós precisa fazer as pazes consigo próprio e aprender os limites do possível.

O mundo está mais para Guerra de Troia do que para Orfeu, com sua lira a tocar para as multidões. Nos vemos no fim de abril, sem falta. Assim disseram os deuses do Olimpo. Ah, e pense duas vezes antes de comer todos os ovos de Páscoa de uma só vez.🐇

🇬🇧 In Greek mythology, Cassandra is the daughter of the kings of Troy, whom Apollo falls in love with. As a gift, he grants her the power to foresee the future. But Cassandra is independent—she has no interest in being anyone’s wife, much less having children and living on Olympus. She thanks Apollo with a beautiful message, full of cute emojis, which he, as a scorned alpha male, responds to with a curse. Cassandra will continue to see the future, but no one will listen to her. Thus begins the tragic fate of someone who sees everything but can do nothing about it.

For some years now, I’ve felt a bit like Cassandra. Far from predicting the future, I can, through association, analysis, and instinct, see where things are headed. I am a keen observer of daily life and consider myself well-informed about history, science, and the ways of the world. I don’t make the same mistake as Sisyphus, another mythological figure. He was intelligent and cunning, but his arrogance was his downfall. Every day, he wakes up and must push a boulder up a mountain. I try to take a more friendly and supportive approach, offering conversations, warnings, and recommendations for books, podcasts, articles, movies, magazines, and websites full of information and advice. But I realize I’m shouting into the void. Cassandra went mad. I want to save myself.

Maybe, more than Cassandra or Sisyphus, I’m seeking the powers of Zeus, who controls everything and commands everyone. But in the 21st century, where gods suffer from burnout or have been replaced by likes, prayer-hand emojis, and algorithms, who am I—a well-meaning man in his fifties—trying to make people take care of themselves, avoid suffering, not overdo things, stay sharp, and be prepared? It’s impossible to manage, especially since I care about a long list: parents, siblings, nieces, cousins, relatives, friends, my friends’ children, my friends’ parents, forests, peace, love, and so on.

So now, it’s like this: Want to sunbathe at noon without sunscreen? Want to drink your seventh tequila along with your medication for high blood pressure or dementia? Want to go to a party during a pandemic? Want to spend five hours a day on Instagram? Want to drink diet soda? Smoke? Drive without a seat belt? Leave your phone on your nightstand while you sleep? Vote for scoundrels? Believe in fake news and follow deepfakes? Your problem! From now on, Cassandra sees nothing, Sisyphus became a gardener, and Zeus is at yoga.

If I had to choose a Greek god for this moment—or for life—I’d like to be Hermes, who protects travelers, has wings on his feet, and carries that magical staff, the caduceus, which helps resolve conflicts, heal ailments, and spread harmony wherever he goes. But for that, I’d need a lot of meditation, breathwork, mula bandha contractions, and chamomile tea. And in the end, each of us must make peace with ourselves and learn the limits of what is possible.

The world feels more like the Trojan War than Orpheus playing his lyre for the crowds. See you at the end of April, without fail. That’s what the gods of Olympus have decreed. Oh, and think twice before eating all your Easter eggs at once.🐇

🇰🇭 O Camboja em 17 impressões | Cambodia in 17 impressions

1 Desde que li The Golden Road, do historiador William Dalrymple, fiquei fascinado pela influência da Índia no Sudeste Asiático. Assim como Roma espalhou o latim pela Europa, mercadores e religiosos indianos levaram a religião (hinduísmo) e a língua (sânscrito) para a Tailândia, Indochina, Malásia e Indonésia. (Lembra que Bali é hinduísta, enquanto o restante da Indonésia é majoritariamente muçulmano?)

Ever since I read The Golden Road by historian William Dalrymple, I’ve been fascinated by India’s influence on Southeast Asia. Just as Rome spread Latin throughout Europe, Indian merchants and religious figures brought religion (Hinduism) and language (Sanskrit) to Thailand, Indochina, Malaysia, and Indonesia. (Remember that Bali is Hindu, while the rest of Indonesia is mostly Muslim?)

2 O maior monumento religioso do mundo é Angkor Wat, construído por volta do ano 1100 d.C. Ele fica em Siem Reap, no coração do Camboja, próximo ao lago Tonle Sap. Começou como um templo dedicado a Vishnu, depois tornou-se um mausoléu e, mais tarde, foi convertido ao budismo. Mil e uma utilidades. Além de Angkor Wat, há vários outros templos enormes na região. O bom é que, com uma única entrada, dá para visitar todos. O que falta são horas no dia (e energia).

The world’s largest religious monument is Angkor Wat, built around the year 1100 AD. It is located in Siem Reap, in the heart of Cambodia, near Tonle Sap Lake. It started as a temple dedicated to Vishnu, later became a mausoleum, and eventually transitioned to Buddhism. A true multipurpose site. Besides Angkor Wat, there are several other massive temples nearby. The good thing is that one entrance ticket grants access to all of them. What’s missing? More hours in the day (and energy).

3 O Império Khmer foi um dos maiores e mais ricos do mundo. Dominava com maestria os fluxos de água e a agricultura. Com todo o arroz acumulado, conquistou territórios do Camboja, Laos, Vietnã e partes da Tailândia e de Mianmar. Mais tarde, inspirou o nome do movimento Khmer Rouge, ver ponto 7.

The Khmer Empire was one of the largest and wealthiest in the world. They mastered water management and agriculture. With their vast rice reserves, they conquered territories in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and parts of Thailand and Myanmar. Their name later inspired the Khmer Rouge movement, check point 7.

4 Quase todo mundo pode solicitar um visto eletrônico e entrar no Camboja com o PDF impresso. Além disso, o país está muito bem conectado por via aérea, principalmente a partir de Cingapura e Bangkok, ou por via terrestre, vindo da Tailândia e do Vietnã.

Almost anyone can apply for an e-visa and enter Cambodia with a printed PDF. The country is also well connected by air, especially via Singapore and Bangkok, or by land from Thailand and Vietnam.

5 Phnom Penh, a capital, lembra Bangkok dos anos 1980: menor, mais calma e menos turística. Tem um Palácio Imperial tão exuberante quanto o tailandês, mas mais fácil de visitar. No centro da cidade, acontece o encontro das águas do rio Mekong, que vem do Himalaia, com as do Tonle Sap, o lago/rio que atravessa o país. A propósito, o Camboja é um reino.

Phnom Penh, the capital, feels like Bangkok in the 1980s: smaller, quieter, and less touristy. It has an Imperial Palace as magnificent as Thailand’s, but easier to visit. In the city center, the waters of the Mekong River, which flows from the Himalayas, meet the Tonle Sap, the lake/river that traverses the country. By the way, Cambodia is a kingdom.

6 O Tonle Sap é um rio e também um lago, sendo um dos poucos no mundo que inverte seu fluxo conforme o nível de água do Mekong, muito maior. É como se, no Brasil, o Tapajós mudasse de direção a cada seis meses por causa do degelo nos Andes.

The Tonle Sap is both a river and a lake, and it is one of the few in the world that reverses its flow depending on the water levels of the much larger Mekong. It’s as if, in Brazil, the Tapajós River changed direction every six months due to the Andean snowmelt.

7 Durante a Guerra Fria, o Camboja viveu um dos experimentos mais radicais de comunismo raiz, liderado pelo Khmer Rouge. O líder, Pol Pot, era um fanático que esvaziou as cidades, exterminou quem sabia ler e escrever e obrigou os sobreviventes a se tornarem camponeses. Mas não conseguiram produzir ovos Label Rouge.

During the Cold War, Cambodia underwent one of the most radical communist experiments in history, led by the Khmer Rouge. Their leader, Pol Pot, was a fanatic who emptied cities, executed anyone who could read or write, and forced the survivors to become peasants. They didn’t manage to produce Label Rouge eggs.

8 A França dominou a região por cerca de um século, explorando arroz, chá, café e borracha, além de exportar ópio para a China. Junto com a Inglaterra, invadiu Pequim e ateou fogo no Palácio de Verão. Depois, foi derrotada pelos vietnamitas na Batalha de Dien Bien Phu, em 1954.

France controlled the region for about a century, exploiting rice, tea, coffee, and rubber, and even exporting opium to China. Alongside the British, they invaded Beijing and set fire to the Summer Palace. Later, they were defeated by the Vietnamese in the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954.

9 Viajar de carro entre Phnom Penh e Siem Reap leva pelo menos cinco horas. Os postos de gasolina têm uma rede local de cafés chamada Amazon Coffee, com um papagaio no logo e tudo. Mas o melhor café é o flat white da rede Brown, acompanhado de um pastelzinho de banana.

Driving between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap takes at least five hours. Gas stations feature a local coffee chain called Amazon Coffee, with a parrot logo. But the best coffee is the flat white from the Brown coffee chain, best enjoyed with a banana pastry.

10 A culinária cambojana é uma mistura de influências do Vietnã, como os rolinhos de arroz e legumes, e da Tailândia, com seus curries. Tudo muito saboroso. Ser vegetariano por lá é fácil e delicioso.

Cambodian food is a mix of Vietnamese influences, such as rice paper rolls with vegetables, and Thai dishes, like curries. Everything is delicious. Being vegetarian there is easy and enjoyable.

11 Vi o sol nascer sentado nas ruínas de uma das bibliotecas de Angkor Wat. Foi lindo ver o dia amanhecer como há mais de mil anos. Quando o sol finalmente surgiu, levei um susto com a quantidade de gente ao redor. Parecia o show da Lady Gaga em Copacabana.

I watched the sunrise while sitting on the ruins of one of Angkor Wat’s libraries. It was breathtaking to witness the dawn just as it has unfolded for over a thousand years. When the sun finally appeared, I was startled by the massive crowd around me. It felt like a Lady Gaga concert in Copacabana.

12 No meio da visita ao templo, tive um flashback, quase uma regressão espiritual, e me vi morando ali durante o reinado de Suryavarman II. Eu tinha seios firmes e cabelos longos, pretos e sedosos. Era uma Apsara, esculpida na pedra. Levei um susto quando voltei a mim mesmo alguns segundos depois.

In the middle of the temple visit, I had a flashback—almost a spiritual regression—and saw myself living there during the reign of Suryavarman II. I had firm breasts and long, silky black hair. I was an Apsara, carved in stone. I snapped out of it a few seconds later, startled.

13 De flashback a Flashdance, fui a um happy hour na piscina de um hotel LGBTQI+ em busca de outras experiências extrasensoriais. Acabei em uma maca de massagem, com dois massagistas competindo pelas minhas partes mais íntimas. Ainda bem que eram cambojanos de mãos pequenas e delicadas.

From flashback to Flashdance, I went to a happy hour at the pool of a very LGBTQI+ hotel, looking for other extrasensory experiences. I ended up on a massage table with two masseurs competing for my most intimate parts. Fortunately, they were Cambodians with small, delicate hands.

14 Fiquei de mau humor ao ver que as pessoas chamam o templo Ta Prohm, aquele com raízes gigantescas e esculturas de cabeças, de “Templo da Lara Croft”, só porque apareceu em Tomb Raider, com Angelina Jolie. A propósito, ela adotou um menino cambojano e hoje é cidadã do país. É como ir a Paris e achar que a Torre Eiffel ficou famosa por causa de Ratatouille.

I was annoyed to hear people referring to Ta Prohm Temple—the one with giant roots and massive carved faces—as “Lara Croft’s Temple,” just because it appeared in Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie. By the way, she adopted a Cambodian boy and is now a citizen of the country. It’s like visiting Paris and thinking the Eiffel Tower is famous because of Ratatouille.

15 Gosto de experimentar coisas locais, então dou preferência ao “produto nacional” nos aplicativos de encontros. Mas, no Camboja, quase todos os jovens dos apps moravam com os pais, e eu estava dividindo o quarto com uma amiga. Acabei saindo com um jovem de Nova Déli chamado Shiva. Foi divertido, porque ele estava hospedado em um hostel para backpackers, com uma piscina enorme no meio, música alta e luzes estroboscópicas. Ele precisou beber meia garrafa de uísque para relaxar. Apelidei-o de Chivas.

I enjoy trying local things, so I usually prefer “homegrown products” on dating apps. But in Cambodia, almost every young guy on the apps lived with his parents, and I was sharing a room with a friend. I ended up meeting a young man from New Delhi named Shiva. It was fun because he was staying at a backpacker hostel with a huge pool in the center, loud music, and strobe lights. He had to drink half a bottle of whiskey to relax. I nicknamed him Chivas.

16 Adorei o Camboja. Pena que fica tão longe. Mas a semana que passei lá valeu por um mês. Sem contar os papos incríveis com minha amiga, as aventuras de tuk-tuk nos engarrafamentos de Phnom Penh e o sorvete de chocolate com pimenta que provei no Night Market de Siem Reap.

I loved Cambodia. Too bad it’s so far away. But the week I spent there felt like a month. Not to mention the amazing conversations with my friend, the tuk-tuk adventures in Phnom Penh’s traffic, and the chili chocolate ice cream I tried at Siem Reap’s Night Market.

Uma pergunta que ouço dezenas de vezes é: vale a pena visitar Dubai? Há quem sonhe com os hotéis dourados e os shoppings luxuosos. Outros juram jamais pisar aqui, onde tudo é fake, arrivista e dominado por costumes medievais. Entre o céu e o inferno, Dubai não está nem nos extremos nem no meio: ocupa todos os espaços. O segredo é descobrir, entre o prédio mais alto e o chá massala mais barato, a Dubai que melhor se encaixa nas expectativas de cada um.

O que sempre respondo é: transforme Dubai em uma escala ao longo de uma viagem maior, como parte do caminho até o Japão, a China ou o Sudeste Asiático. Ou faça uma escala em Roma, Istambul ou Etiópia antes de chegar aqui. Monte uma combinação interessante para dar mais sabor à viagem. Mas, sobretudo, evite julho e agosto, o auge do verão, quando a única coisa que dá para fazer é ficar dentro do hotel refrigerado ou desmaiar suado na fila do táxi.

Minha relação com o emirado é afetiva e vem de longe. Vivi aqui alguns dos melhores anos da minha juventude. Cheguei antes de existir uma cidade em forma de palmeira sobre o mar, prédios acima de 50 andares ou voos diários para o Brasil. Explorei os bairros populares, fiz amigos (alguns ainda estão aqui) e viajei por toda a região, do Iêmen ao Irã, do Líbano à Índia. Servi umas 7.500 bandejas, abri incontáveis latinhas de refrigerante e repeti, sempre sorrindo e com voz de fada madrinha, o mantra chicken or beef, intercalado por lamb or pasta. Tudo para “visitar o mundo inteiro sem gastar nenhum tostão”. (Relato esses três anos de vida pelos céus no antiquíssimo blog Views from the Top).

A cada visita, procuro conhecer algo novo. Gosto de viajar de carro pelo deserto e pelos emirados ao longo do Mar Arábico. Há montanhas na fronteira com Omã, gigantescas dunas em Liwa, museus lindos em Abu Dhabi, e povoados em Ras Al Khaimah ou Fujairah. Longe do burburinho da Marina, da Palm Jumeirah e de Downtown, é possível fechar os olhos e sentir-se verdadeiramente no Oriente Médio em não em Las Vegas. Mas, se o desejo do viajante é beber champanhe numa piscina de borda infinita para depois jantar bife de Kobe no Sushi Samba ou atum fresco no Zuma, basta pegar outro táxi. Escolha é o que nunca falta por aqui.

Desta vez, visitei a Abrahamic Family House, em Abu Dhabi — uma joia arquitetônica que promove o diálogo entre muçulmanos, cristãos e judeus. Também subi ao topo do Burj Khalifa pela primeira vez. Com a lição de casa feita, sigo em frente para o destino final: um luxuriante país tropical no Sudeste Asiático, com leve sotaque francês e templos milenares carcomidos pela floresta. E, para ter um aproveitamento de 100% em passagens e sabores, volto para casa passando por outro país do Golfo Pérsico que nunca visitei. Tudo isso fica para o mês que vem, ok?

🇬🇧 A question I get asked dozens of times: is it worth visiting Dubai? Some dream of golden hotels and luxurious malls. Others swear they’ll never set foot here, dismissing it as fake, pretentious, and dominated by medieval customs. Between heaven and hell, Dubai is neither at the extremes nor in the middle—it occupies all the spaces. The secret lies in discovering, among the tallest buildings and the cheapest masala tea, the Dubai that best fits your expectations.

What I always recommend is making Dubai a stopover during a larger trip—on your way to Japan, China, or Southeast Asia. Or consider stopping in Rome, Istanbul, or Ethiopia before arriving here. Create an interesting combination to add more flavor to your journey. Above all, avoid July and August, the peak of summer, when the only things you can do are stay inside an air-conditioned hotel or risk passing out, drenched in sweat, in a taxi queue.

My relationship with the emirate is emotional and dates back a long way. I lived some of the best years of my youth here. I arrived before there was a palm-shaped city on the sea, before buildings taller than 50 stories, or daily flights to Brazil. I explored the local neighborhoods, made friends (some of whom are still here), and traveled throughout the region—from Yemen to Iran, from Lebanon to India. I served about 7,500 trays, opened countless soda cans, and, always with a smile and a fairy-tale voice, repeated the mantras “chicken or beef,” alternating with “lamb or pasta.” All this to “visit the whole world without spending a penny.” (I recount those three years of life in the skies on my old blog Views from the Top).

On every visit, I try to discover something new. I enjoy driving through the desert and visiting the emirates along the Arabian Sea. There are mountains on the border with Oman, gigantic dunes in Liwa, incredible museums in Abu Dhabi, and villages in Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. Away from the buzz of the Marina, Palm Jumeirah, and Downtown, it’s possible to close your eyes and truly feel like you’re in the Middle East—not in Las Vegas. But if a traveler’s dream is sipping champagne in an infinity pool, followed by dining on Kobe beef at Sushi Samba or fresh tuna at Zuma, another taxi will take you right there. Dubai is awash with options.

This time, I visited the Abrahamic Family House in Abu Dhabi—an architectural gem that fosters dialogue between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. I also went to the top of the Burj Khalifa for the first time. With my homework done, I’m moving on to my final destination: a lush tropical country in Southeast Asia, with a slight French accent and ancient temples overtaken by the forest. To make the most of my tickets and flavors, I’ll return home through another Gulf country I’ve never visited before. All that’s planned for next month, okay?

Quando a primeira árvore de Natal surge no shopping, sinto uma angústia sobrenatural. Assim que as luzinhas coloridas se acendem nas portarias dos condomínios, elaboro um plano de fuga. Meu destino de escape deste ano foi um lugar que imaginei ser o mais “desnatalizado” possível. Isolei-me nas Ilhas Malvinas (escrevi este texto enquanto estava lá; agora estou no interior do Paraná, são e salvo de renas, elfos e fogos de artifício). Leia-se Mal-vi-nas, e não Mal-di-vas.

Escrevi esta newsletter em dois capítulos. O primeiro é este que teus olhos estão percorrendo agora. O segundo é um relato um pouco mais revelador, disponível aqui. Descobri que, quando me empolgo no texto e me esmero nas fotos, a newsletter tende a ir para o spam. Quando ela é mais curta, a chance de chegar à caixa de entrada certa é maior.

Viajar para as Malvinas é um compromisso consigo mesmo. Como só existe um voo comercial por semana entre o sul do Chile e a base militar inglesa de Mount Pleasant, não há como ficar menos. Há cruzeiros entre a Antártida e a Patagônia que param na capital, Port Stanley, por algumas horas, mas, depois da minha experiência em navios (relatada aqui), prefiro terra firme.

Nem um arquipélago remoto escapa da folia natalina no mundo conectado. As redes comerciais globalizadas abasteceram de enfeites até mesmo essas ilhas distantes. A pousada parecia uma cabana kitsch, decorada com meias na lareira e bandeirinhas. Por meio de satélites, cabos submarinos e algoritmos sofisticados, até Mariah Carey chegou aqui, diariamente, das 7h às 22h. Com infinitas playlists no Spotify, o dono do bed & breakfast cantava “All I Want for Christmas Is You” bem alto, acompanhando a cantora. Vi pinguins na baía em frente escutando a canção do Rudolph, a rena do nariz vermelho. Detalhe: as caixas de som estavam estrategicamente posicionadas atrás dos meus travesseiros. Despertador: “Last Christmas, I gave you my heart…”

Tornei-me refém da alegria natalina. Enquanto tomava meus cappuccinos extra large com leite de caixinha vindo de Londres e pó de cacau Cadbury, observava os almoços e jantares de fim de ano das turmas locais. Como pode haver tanta confraternização numa ilha com apenas 3 mil habitantes? Será que todo mundo não se conhece? Talvez quem não participa seja exilado nas Ilhas Sandwich, a algumas milhas náuticas daqui.

Aprendi que não há fuga do Natal. Rendendo-me, eliminei uma preocupação para 2025. Se não posso vencê-lo, unirei-me a ele (olha a mesóclise linda!). Aproveito os últimos minutos do ano para agradecer por sua companhia em 2024 e desejar que, daqui a um ano, estejamos juntos novamente, firmes e fortes, apesar do louco mundo à nossa volta. Feliz 2025! Nos vemos no final de janeiro. “Todos os nossos sonhos serão verdade. O futuro já começou!”

Malvinas. Não Maldivas!

🇬🇧 When the first Christmas tree appears in the mall, I feel an acute anguish. As soon as the colorful lights turn on at the entrances of offices, I devise an escape plan. This year, my getaway destination was a place I imagined to be as “de-Christmas-ed” as possible. I secluded myself in the Falkland Islands (I wrote this text while I was there; now I’m in the countryside of Paraná, safe and sound from reindeer, elves, and fireworks). Falklands or Malvinas?

I’ve written this newsletter in two chapters. The first is the one your eyes are currently scanning. The second is a slightly more revealing account, available here. I’ve discovered that when I get carried away with words and indulge in photos, the newsletter tends to end up in spam. When it’s shorter, the chances of it landing in the right inbox are much higher.

Traveling to the Falklands is a commitment to oneself. Since there’s only one commercial flight per week between southern Chile and the British military base at Mount Pleasant, shorter stays are impossible. There are cruises between Antarctica and Patagonia that stop in the capital, Port Stanley, for a few hours, but after my experience aboard ships (detailed at this link), I definitely prefer solid ground.

In our interconnected world, not even a remote archipelago escapes the Christmas frenzy. The globalized commercial networks have stocked even these distant islands with decorations. The inn resembled a kitsch cabin, decked out with stockings over the fireplace and tiny flags. Through satellites, submarine cables, and sophisticated algorithms, even Mariah Carey made her way here, daily, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. With endless Spotify playlists, the bed & breakfast owner sang “All I Want for Christmas Is You” loudly along with the singer. I even spotted penguins in the bay out front listening to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Fun fact: the speakers were conveniently placed right behind my pillows. Wake up call? “Last Christmas, I gave you my heart…”

I became a hostage to Christmas cheer. While sipping an extra-large cappuccino with milk imported from London and Cadbury cocoa powder, I watched the year-end lunches and dinners of the local crowd. How can there be so much festivity on an island with only 3,000 inhabitants? Doesn’t everyone already know everybody else? I suspect those who don’t show up are exiled to the Sandwich Islands, a few nautical miles away.

I’ve learned there’s no escaping Christmas. I’ve surrendered. One less thing to worry about in 2025. If you can’t beat it, join it. On that note, I’ll use these final minutes of the year to thank you for keeping me company in 2024 and to wish that, a year from now, we’ll be here again, standing strong despite the crazy world around us. Happy 2025! See you at the end of January.

Malvinas. Not Maldives!

Suíça, Suécia. Eslovênia, Eslováquia. Maldivas, Malvinas. Nomes tão parecidos, frequentemente confundidos, mas que, ao desembaralhar das letras, designam lugares completamente diferentes. No caso das Malvinas, tudo é tão intrincado que não me atrevo a puxar fios soltos. O terreno ainda é minado, mesmo após 40 anos do fim da guerra entre Reino Unido e Argentina.

Se eu tivesse que descrever o conflito em um tweet, seria algo como: ingleses abandonaram, argentinos invadiram, ingleses retomaram, argentinos não aceitaram. É claro que, para explicar os pormenores, talvez fosse necessário escrever um livro, uma tese de mestrado ou gravar um podcast. A história mudaria bastante dependendo de quem a conta — amigos argentinos ou ingleses. A melhor frase que li sobre o tema (e sobre todos os conflitos atuais) é um provérbio russo que diz mais ou menos assim: “É fácil transformar um peixe no aquário em sopa de peixe, mas muito difícil transformar uma sopa de peixe em um peixe no aquário.”

O que sempre atiçou minha curiosidade, até me convencer a pegar um avião e vir para cá, foram os cartazes ubíquos na Argentina que afirmam, em letras maiúsculas, que LAS MALVINAS SON ARGENTINAS. No ano passado, visitei o Museu das Malvinas em Buenos Aires, que me convenceu da enorme injustiça que foram os 70 dias de batalha nos anos 1980 (1982, para ser exato) e do poder imperialista dos britânicos. Apenas em 2020, quatro décadas após o armistício, as minas terrestres foram finalmente desativadas em todas as Falklands — ou melhor, Malvinas. Um exemplo de como as guerras nunca terminam quando parecem ter acabado.

Falklands e Malvinas são nomes diferentes para o mesmo lugar. Mais do que isso, representam projetos de domínio sobre este arquipélago perdido no meio do nada, refúgio de orcas, pinguins e golfinhos. Franceses, ingleses e espanhóis chegaram quase ao mesmo tempo, mas sem saber uns dos outros. A disputa pelo controle das ilhas dependia das alianças imperiais na Europa. Hoje, cerca de 3 mil pessoas vivem aqui, cercadas por 450 mil ovelhas. A bandeira é britânica, a moeda é a libra esterlina, e os supermercados são abastecidos com produtos da Inglaterra. God save the King.

Port Stanley, a capital, parece cenário de uma série ambientada na Escócia. Casas geminadas, gramados bem cuidados, cabines telefônicas, carros no “lado errado” da estrada, e os intermináveis dias de verão. Fiz muitas caminhadas — a única atividade disponível (fora observar pássaros). Uma delas para ver os pinguins de Gipsy Cove, outra para observar os restos de uma cozinha militar argentina. Atravessei a baía de Stanley só para tirar uma foto com um ônibus double-decker londrino. Acabei no lixão da ilha, levado pelo vento ao longo de uma estrada bonita, até chegar à beira do mar, onde vi urubus e gaivotas disputando cascas de banana.

Sentado na beira do lixão, escondido do vento atrás de um contêiner, abri meu sanduíche de cheddar com picles de cebola, acompanhado de um pacotinho de batatinhas sabor vinagre. Os pássaros se agitaram, planando em círculos acima de mim. Eram muitos. Por que não se uniram para avançar? Por que as ovelhas não formam uma estratégia para tomar a ilha? São 150 para cada habitante humano. Se conseguissem uma aliança com as gaivotas, alistassem os urubus e recrutassem as quatro espécies de pinguins, pronto: las Malvinas son la revolución. George Orwell ficaria orgulhoso.

Do lixão, voltei para a pousada contra o vento, quase arrependido de ter ido tão longe. Pensei nos tais bichos que não se rebelam contra as forças opressoras; em Margaret Thatcher, que ordenou o ataque ao submarino argentino Belgrano; nos militares da Casa Rosada, que criaram uma guerra externa para mascarar os crimes internos; no aquecimento global; e na playlist da Mariah Carey que me aguardava na pousada. Felizmente, no dia seguinte, o avião da Latam viria me buscar.

🇬🇧 Burma and Borneo. Mali and Maui. Slovakia and Slovenia. Maldives and Malvinas. Names so similar, often confused, but once the letters are unscrambled, they refer to completely different places. In the case of the Malvinas, known in English as the Falklands, everything is so tangled that I don’t dare pull at any loose threads. The terrain remains metaphorically and literally mined, even 40 years after the war between the United Kingdom and Argentina.

If I had to summarize the conflict in a tweet, it would go something like this: the British left, the Argentinians invaded, the British reclaimed, the Argentinians didn’t accept it. Of course, to explain it in detail, I’d probably need to write a book, a master’s thesis, or record a podcast. The story would also vary greatly depending on whether it was told by Argentine or British narrators. The best phrase I’ve read about this topic—and about all modern conflicts—is a Russian proverb that says: “It’s easy to turn a fish in an aquarium into fish soup, but very hard to turn fish soup back into a fish in an aquarium.”

What always piqued my curiosity, eventually convincing me to hop on a plane and come here, were the ubiquitous posters in Argentina boldly declaring in capital letters that LAS MALVINAS SON ARGENTINAS. Last year, I visited the Malvinas Museum in Buenos Aires, which made a compelling case for the grave injustice of the 70-day conflict in the 1980s (1982, to be precise) and highlighted the imperialist power of the British. It wasn’t until 2020, four decades after the armistice, that all the landmines were finally deactivated across the Falklands—or rather, the Malvinas. Proof that wars rarely end when the soldiers go home.

Falklands and Malvinas are two names for the same place. More than just names, they symbolize competing claims over this remote archipelago, home to orcas, penguins, and dolphins. The French, British, and Spanish arrived almost simultaneously, unaware of one another. The fight for control over the islands often depended on shifting imperial alliances in Europe. Today, around 3,000 people live here, surrounded by 450,000 sheep. The flag is British, the currency is the pound sterling, and supermarkets are stocked with goods from England. God save the King.

Port Stanley, the capital, could easily serve as the set of a TV series set in Scotland. Terraced houses, well-kept lawns, red phone booths, cars driving on the “wrong” side of the road, and endless summer days define the scene. I went on many walks—the only real activity available. One took me to the penguins at Gipsy Cove; another to the remnants of an Argentine military kitchen. I crossed Stanley’s bay just to take a picture with a London double-decker bus. I even ended up at the island’s landfill, carried by the wind along a picturesque road, only to find myself by the shore, watching vultures and seagulls fight over banana peels.

Sitting by the landfill, sheltered from the wind behind a container, I opened my cheddar-and-onion-pickle sandwich, accompanied by a bag of salt-and-vinegar crisps. The birds grew restless, circling above me. There were so many of them. Why didn’t they band together and attack? Why don’t the sheep devise a plan to take over the island? They outnumber humans 150 to one. If they could form an alliance with the seagulls, recruit the vultures, and join forces with the four species of penguins, that would settle it. George Orwell would be proud.

From the landfill, I trudged back to the inn against the wind, almost regretting how far I had walked. I thought about those creatures that don’t rise up against their oppressors; about Margaret Thatcher, who ordered the attack on the Argentine submarine Belgrano; about the military leaders in the Casa Rosada, who ignited a war to cover up their crimes; about global warming; and about the Mariah Carey playlist waiting for me back at the inn. Luckily, the following day, the LATAM Airlines plane would come to take me home.

Levei uma rasteira do tempo. Quando me dei conta, novembro já tinha ido embora. Estive tão imerso no turbilhão dos afazeres que não percebi os pinheirinhos iluminados, os trenós decorativos e os bilhetinhos de amigo secreto. Pensando tanto na newsletter do mês que vem, acabei me esquecendo completamente desta. Farei uma breve escapada que será o tema da nossa conversa de dezembro. Por enquanto é surpresa.

Sou do time que adoraria entrar em uma caverna agora e sair somente no meio de janeiro. Mas, como ainda tenho um pouco de consideração com o espírito natalino e não quero ser cancelado pela família e pelos amigos, o máximo que fiz foi programar uma miniviagem de 10 dias. Já dá certo alívio e volto para casa junto com as renas e os jingle bells, quase emendando um “Feliz Ano Novo” antes de apertar “enviar" no último texto de 2024.

Tropecei em novembro porque depois do Caminho de Santiago (TravelVince News #31), passei por Madri e Barcelona. Fazia 10 anos que não visitava minha arrebatadora paixão de juventude, a capital da Catalunha. Foi lindo! Nos amamos loucamente por uma semana.

Não consigo me apaixonar por pessoas — dá muito trabalho. Mas me apaixono por cidades, lugares onde posso viver vidas paralelas, ser várias versões melhoradas de mim. Quando volto para casa, me sinto avulso, comezinho. Volto a ter colesterol, cáries, unha encravada. Todos gostaríamos de esticar as férias de verão, a juventude, a festa de arromba ou uma noite de sexo voraz. Só que dezembro sempre chega rápido demais.

🇬🇧 I got sidetracked by time. When I realized it, November had already slipped away. I was so immersed in the whirlwind of life that I didn’t notice the lit-up Christmas trees, decorative sleighs, or Secret Santa notes. So focused on next month’s newsletter, I completely forgot about this one. I’ll make a quick getaway, which will be the theme of our December conversation. For now, it’s still a surprise.

I’m the kind of person who would love to crawl into a cave now and only come out in mid-January. But since I still have some regard for the Christmas spirit and don’t want to be canceled by family and friends, the best I could do was plan a 10-day mini trip. It’s already a relief, and I’ll return home along with the reindeer and jingle bells, nearly shouting “Happy New Year” as I hit “send” on the last text of 2024.

I stumbled through November because, after the Camino de Santiago (TravelVince News #31), I spent some time in Madrid and Barcelona. It had been 10 years since I last visited the city that was my insane passion of youth, the capital of Catalonia. It was beautiful! We fell madly in love for a week.

I can’t seem to fall in love with people—it’s too much work. But I do fall in love with cities, places where I can live parallel lives, and be multiple, improved versions of myself. When I return home, I feel out of place, ordinary. I go back to having high cholesterol, cavities, and ingrown toenails. We all wish we could stretch summer vacations, youth, wild parties, or a night of passionate sex. But December always comes too soon.

Levei quase 50 anos para descobrir uma das formas mais interessantes e gratificantes de viajar. Caminhei durante 19 dias, percorrendo 314 km do Camino del Norte, desde o aeroporto de Astúrias, que serve Oviedo, até Santiago de Compostela, na Galícia.

Fazer o Caminho de Santiago é revelador, meditativo, uma experiência transformadora. Talvez seja uma das rotas mais populares da Europa há séculos, simplesmente por suas qualidades comoventes. Dizem, inclusive, que foi o Caminho e a profusão de peregrinos que forjou o conceito de Europa.

Dos 19 dias, cada um foi uma cópia do outro. Acordava antes do sol nascer. Mochila nas costas, botas nos pés e, simbora, a seguir as flechas amarelas durante 4 a 5 horas. No povoado seguinte, tomava um banho delicioso e saía de meias e chinelos para comer. Quase sempre, uma tortilha de batatas num balcão animado por senhores mais velhos que as pedras do Caminho.

Mesmo seguindo essa fórmula, a caminhada em si era sempre completamente diferente. Cada dia, o Caminho me trazia algo inusitado com que me ocupar, pensar, me alumbrar e deslumbrar. Houve momentos de irritação com a mochila, com as botas molhadas e as meias úmidas. Choveu, fez sol, ventou, subi, desci, e o corpo, aos poucos, foi entrando em sintonia com tudo. Foi tão poderoso quanto um retiro de 10 dias de Vipassana, a meditação em silêncio.

Agora estou viciado em caminhar. As distâncias tomaram uma nova proporção. A geografia das paisagens passou a ser um grande atrativo. Enquanto caminho, penso menos em bobagens. Quando elas vêm, sei que logo desaparecem, até mesmo com os pés gelados e encharcados. Não quero parar. Iria a pé de Santiago de Compostela a Hong Kong!

Vejo a Catedral de Santiago, onde dizem estar os restos do santo, amigo íntimo de Jesus. Não sou religioso, mas a sensação de entrar no templo, com os cânticos e o cheiro milenar de incenso, faz com que o tempo se comprima e se dilate. Santos, estrelas, manjedouras, carpinteiros, traidores, catacumbas, magos e até mesmo o sinal da cruz fazem sentido, de certa forma. Quando faltavam poucos dias para chegar, a trilha ficou cheia. Gente de todo o mundo, de bicicleta, conversadores, grupos. Me dei conta de que estávamos todos, cada um à sua maneira e ritmo, a caminho do mesmo altar. Num clique, formamos uma comunhão.

Recomendo caminhadas. Passeios sem fones de ouvido. Colocar-se à mercê dos elementos. Carregar consigo o básico do básico e sempre acreditar em si e na bondade dos outros. Acreditar em algo superior. Acreditar que há mais coisas entre o céu e a terra do que imaginamos. Acreditar que há saída para nossas encruzilhadas.

Queria começar o Caminho novamente. O bom é que há várias rotas até aqui: do Porto, da França, por Rioja. Mas há também outros caminhos. Basta abrir a porta e dar o primeiro passo.

Amanhã, pego o trem de alta velocidade para Madri. Em quatro horas, cobrirei mais do que o dobro da distância que levei 19 dias caminhando. Vou precisar me reacomodar aos ritmos e às multidões. A vida é um constante reajuste afinal.

🇬🇧 It took me almost 50 years to discover one of the most interesting and rewarding ways to travel. I walked for 19 days, covering 314 km along the Camino del Norte, from Asturias Airport, which serves Oviedo, to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.

Walking the Camino de Santiago is enlightening, meditative, a transformative experience. Perhaps it has been one of the most popular routes in Europe for centuries, simply because of these heartfelt qualities. They even say it was the Camino and the multitude of pilgrims that forged the concept of Europe.

Of the 19 days, each was a copy of the other. I woke up before sunrise, backpack on my shoulders, boots on my feet, and off I went, following the yellow arrows for 4 to 5 hours. After arriving at the next village, I would take a refreshing shower and go out in socks and sandals to eat. Almost always, a potato tortilla at a counter animated by men older than the stones on the Camino.

Even following this formula, the walk itself was always entirely different. Each day, the Camino brought me something unexpected to occupy my mind, think about, be amazed and dazzled by. There were moments of frustration with the backpack, with wet boots and damp socks. It rained, it was sunny, it was windy, I climbed, I descended, and gradually my body found its rhythm with everything. It was as powerful as a 10-day Vipassana silent meditation retreat.

Now I’m hooked on walking. Distances have taken on a new dimension. The geography of the landscapes has become a major attraction. As I walk, I think less about trivialities. When they arise, I know they will soon disappear, even with cold, soaked feet. I don’t want to stop. I’d walk from Santiago de Compostela to Hong Kong!

I see the Cathedral of Santiago, where the remains of a saint, a close friend of Jesus, lie. I’m not religious, but the feeling of entering the temple, with the chanting and the millennia-old scent of incense, makes time compress and expand. Saints, stars, mangers, carpenters, traitors, catacombs, magi, and even the sign of the cross start to make sense, in a way. When there were only a few days left to arrive, the trail became crowded with people from all over the world, on bikes, chatty groups, excursions of all kinds. I realized that we were all, each in our own way and rhythm, headed to the same altar. In an instant, we formed a communion.

I recommend walking. Walks without headphones. Placing oneself at the mercy of the elements. Carrying only the bare essentials and always believing in oneself and in the generosity of others. Believing in something greater. Believing that there are more things between heaven and earth than we can imagine. Believing that there is always a way out of our crossroads.

I wanted to start the Camino again. The good thing is that there are many routes to get here: from Porto, from France, through Rioja. But there are also other paths. Just open the door and take the first step.

Tomorrow, I’ll take the high-speed train to Madrid. In four hours, I’ll cover more than double the distance that took me 19 days of walking. I’ll have to readjust to the pace and the crowds. But life is constant readjustment.
